Honda NRX1800 Valkyrie Rune Service Manual (2004)

Honda developed the Valkyrie Rune as a radical factory-custom motorcycle for the North American market, turning the sort of styling normally associated with concept motorcycles into a limited-production road machine. The production Rune was presented as a 2004 model, while Honda subsequently displayed it internationally at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show as an overseas exhibition model. Its exaggerated proportions, extensive polished and chromed surfaces and highly unconventional front end made it markedly different from the earlier GL1500-based Valkyrie family.

The Rune used Honda's 1,832 cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine architecture, closely related to the contemporary GL1800 Gold Wing powerplant, but installed in a completely different custom-cruiser package. Honda gave the NRX1800 its own diamond-frame chassis, a very low 690 mm seat and unusual bottom-link front suspension. The result was a substantial motorcycle, with Honda listing a curb weight of roughly 398 kg, yet one with engineering and chassis details far removed from a conventional heavyweight cruiser.

The engineering specification was unusually elaborate for a styling-led custom motorcycle. The Rune combined PGM-FI, a hydraulically operated clutch, shaft final drive and Honda's Combined Brake System with an electronically integrated security arrangement. Its immobilizer recognizes a coded transponder in the ignition key, while the remote steering-lock mechanism uses a cable, solenoid and ECM-controlled release system. The Valkyrie Rune was built at Honda's motorcycle operation in Marysville, Ohio, alongside Honda's large touring motorcycles. Honda records from the period identify the Rune with that plant, and U.S. model-year records confirm NRX1800 Valkyrie Rune entries for both 2004 and 2005. The manual offered on this particular download page is the earlier issue dated May 2003 and corresponds to the original 2004 NRX1800 service documentation, rather than the later 61MEC01 revision that formally covers both years.
