Erik Buell, an ex-Harley-Davidson engineer, founded Buell Motorcycles in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1983. In 1993, Harley-Davidson acquired a 49 percent ownership in Buell, and by 2003, Buell had become a wholly owned subsidiary of Harley-Davidson. On November 17, 2006, Buell announced that it has constructed and shipped its 100,000th motorcycle.
On October 15, 2009, Harley-Davidson announced the discontinuation of the Buell product line as part of its goal to focus on the Harley-Davidson brand. Harley-Davidson produced the last Buell motorcycle on October 30, 2009, bringing the total number produced to 136,923.
Erik Buell Racing, an independent company run by Erik Buell, was launched in November 2009, initially producing race-only versions of the 1125R model, then offering an updated 1190RS model for the street or the track, and producing further improved 1190RX and 1190SX models for the street or the track.
Buell Motorcycles announced in February 2021 that they will restart production under Erik Buell Racing’s new ownership (EBR). Buell has said that the superbike platforms constructed between 2011 and 2020 would be used to increase their model portfolio to roughly 10 models by 2024. There will be touring, dirt, adventure, and cruiser models available.
