About the Buell XB12R and XB9R
Buell introduced the Firebolt XB9R for the 2002 model year as the first production motorcycle built around the XB architecture. The platform was developed around extreme packaging efficiency and mass centralization rather than conventional sportbike layout. Fuel was carried inside the aluminum twin-spar frame, engine oil was stored in the swingarm, the exhaust sat beneath the engine, and the front brake used Buell’s perimeter-mounted rotor. Cycle World’s original XB9R technical preview documented how the 52-inch-wheelbase concept drove many of these engineering choices and established the character of the Firebolt line.
The XB9R used the 984 cm³ short-stroke Thunderstorm V-twin, with an 88.9 mm bore, 79.38 mm stroke, DDFI electronic fuel injection and a five-speed gearbox. Its compact dimensions, steep steering geometry, fully adjustable suspension and strong emphasis on low-speed and midrange torque made the Firebolt a different proposition from contemporary high-revving inline-four supersports. The basic layout also became the foundation for the broader XB family, including Lightning and later Ulysses derivatives.
Buell expanded the Firebolt range for 2004 with the XB12R. The larger model retained the same 88.9 mm bore but increased stroke to approximately 97 mm for 1,203 cm³ displacement. It used a larger 49 mm intake compared with the XB9R’s 45 mm intake and added the electronically controlled interactive exhaust system. The result preserved the same short-wheelbase chassis while giving riders a more torque-focused alternative to the quicker-revving 984 cm³ model.
The 2006 model year brought one of the more important mechanical updates to the XB platform, including a revised transmission, stiffer swingarm structure and redesigned intake system. Those changes carried into 2007, when the Firebolt range remained mechanically centered on the established XB9R/XB12R pairing. The principal documented 2007 lineup change was the move from Dunlop tires to Pirelli equipment across the XB range. Contemporary 2007 model coverage from Powersports Business lists both Firebolt models and specifies Pirelli Diablo T tires for the road-focused XB models. Harley-Davidson’s official 2007 Firebolt specifications confirm the 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear Pirelli Diablo T fitment, along with the 52-inch wheelbase and established XB drivetrain ratios.
By 2007, the Firebolt had matured into a well-defined fuel-in-frame American V-twin sportbike family rather than the experimental newcomer of the early XB years. The 984 cm³ and 1,203 cm³ versions shared the same core chassis ideas while offering distinct engine characters. This listing corresponds specifically to factory publication 99493-07Y for the 2007 Firebolt models. Related documentation is available in the Buell Firebolt service manual catalog.
