Buell XB Models Service Manual (2010)

Buell introduced the XB platform with the Firebolt XB9R for the 2002 model year, replacing the company’s earlier tubular-frame approach with a much more integrated chassis concept. Fuel was carried inside the aluminum frame, engine oil inside the swingarm, and the perimeter-mounted front brake reduced unsprung weight while freeing space at the wheel hub. Cycle World noted in early 2003 that the XB9R had been introduced the previous year, confirming the start of the XB generation. The layout established the core engineering identity that would define Buell’s sport motorcycles through the end of the decade.

The platform broadened almost immediately. The XB9S Lightning appeared for 2003 as the naked, more upright counterpart to the Firebolt, retaining the compact wheelbase and 984 cm³ Thunderstorm V-twin while changing the bodywork and riding position. As the range developed, Buell added 1,203 cm³ XB12 derivatives and created increasingly specialized versions around the same architecture. The Ulysses line was the biggest change in role for the platform. The XB12X applied the same 1,203 cm³ Thunderstorm engine and XB chassis principles to an upright adventure-touring format with longer-travel suspension and touring capability. The range continued to diversify through the late 2000s. For 2008, Buell’s VIN records included the Lightning Super TT and added the road-oriented XB12XT to the Ulysses family. For 2009, the XB12XP police model also appeared in the factory lineup. These developments show how Buell kept adapting the same basic XB structure for sport, street, touring, adventure and specialist use rather than replacing it with a conventional successor platform.

The 2010 model year represents the final and most diverse factory form of the XB range. Harley-Davidson’s official 2010 VIN data lists the XB9SX, XB12R, XB12Scg, XB12Ss, XB12X, XB12XP, XB12XT and XB12SX. Compared with the 2009 VIN table, the XB12SX is the new addition for 2010, extending the Lightning branch with another 1,203 cm³ variant. The XB9SX remained the 984 cm³ CityX model, while the XB12 models shared the larger 1,203 cm³ engine. Across the range, the platform retained its 45-degree air-cooled V-twin, DDFI electronic fuel injection, five-speed transmission and toothed-belt final drive. The 2010 XB range also belongs to the closing chapter of the original Buell Motorcycle Company.
