Aprilia Tuono 1000

The Aprilia Tuono is a naked motorcycle produced by Aprilia beginning in 2002. It’s inspired on the Aprilia RSV Mille. Its engine, gearbox, chassis, and, to a lesser extent, suspension are shared by its successor, the Aprilia RSV1000R superbike. The Tuono was replaced by the Aprilia Tuono V4 R for the 2011 model year, however the V2 model was still in production.

The Tuono 1000 R, the second generation Tuono, is based on the Aprilia RSV1000R superbike from 2004 to 2009. The Tuono 1000 R and the RSV1000R vary in that the latter includes a rear shock with adjustable compression and rebound damping, as well as adjustable preload. Only the preload and rebound damping of the Tuono 1000 R are adjustable.

As a result, the basic Tuono is less useful as a track bike than the Mille. However, because the parts between the two are interchangeable and plentiful, anyone seeking to utilize the Tuono as a track bike should have no trouble changing the rear shock.

Other visual distinctions include the lack of a complete fairing, a superbike handlebar instead of clip-ons, and various color schemes. The Tuono 1000 R, like the original generation Tuono, comes fitted with a steering damper.

When compared to the first generation Tuono, the BRP-Rotax V990 60° V-Twin engine was significantly improved: different gear ratios (close ratio with longer first gear), larger throttle bodies, single spark plug, minor cosmetic changes, and an increase in power output to 99.8 kW (135.7 PS; 133.8 hp) @ 9500 rpm. @ 8500 rpm, torque rose to 11.9 kgm (117 Nm; 86 lbft).

The Tuono 1000 R is the standard version, based on the Aprilia RSV1000R, and is available from 2006 to 2010. Aprilia’s flagship naked bike is the Tuono 1000 R Factory.

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

The Aprilia Shiver 750, also called Aprilia SL 750 Shiver, is a motorcycle sports street motorcycle Italian Aprilia from 2007 to 2016.

Previewed in November 2006 at the EICMA in Milan, the bike is characterized by being among the first to bring the Ride by Wire Technology on a production bike and on a V-twin engine. 90 °; the system consists of the electronic management of the throttle, throttle and throttle body, which acts through a control unit and changes the mapping according to three modes selectable by the motorcyclist. The “Ride by Wire” electronic throttle has three settings called Sport, Touring and Rain. Sport mode is the most performing, with the engine delivering the maximum power and torque available; Touring mode reduces the responsiveness of the engine by softening and softening the power output; Rain mode reduces torque by 25%. The digital instrument cluster is equipped with instruments that also include gear indicator.

The engine, a 749 cm³ forward-facing twin cylinder with distribution double overhead camshaft, is capable of delivering 95 HP of power at 9000 rpm and 81 Nm of torque at 8500 rpm. The frame is in aluminum for a total weight of the entire bike of 189 kg dry, the shock absorbers are both adjustable with a fork 43 mm upside-down.

A partially faired version known as the Shiver 750 GT, launched in 2009 and produced until 2013.

Aprilia RX 125 & SX 125

The Aprilia RX are the enduro motorcycles / road of house the Noale models Cross but with an electrical system that also includes the headlights, arrows , stops and various warning lights, such as the oil warning light , in addition they also have one rear-view mirror, a petrol tap with reserve, the mixer for separate lubrication and obviously the plate. The models are produced by Aprilia in displacements of 50 and 125 cm³ and are placed between enduro and off-road bikes, before the 125 version was weakened.

The Aprilia RX 125 is the higher displacement version and was produced continuously from 1985 to 1999, then after a pause it resumed production from 2008 to 2010.

Released for sale in 2008, in the wake of the Aprilia RXV 450 the new RX 125 model comes out (also in the motard version called SX) which follows its shapes with particularly angular lines and red and black coloring. The bike was not very successful also given the poverty of the materials and the economy with which it was designed and is still unpopular and not considered by RX lovers. The engine adopted was always the by now old Rotax 122, with a new frame , being in trellis of tubes with cast steel plates. Furthermore, this model has the Euro 3 homologation; It was produced until 2010.

The Aprilia SX 125 is the larger displacement version and was produced from 2007 until 2013.

This model, unlike the previous one, has a completely redesigned livery, so as to bring it closer to the “SXV”, while mechanically it adopts new solutions for compliance with the most severe anti-pollution regulations (Euro 3) and no longer uses a larger braking disc compared to the RX. The power of the bike in the free power version is around 16 kW.

Aprilia RSV4 RR

The Aprilia RSV4 is a motorcycle sport road motorcycle Italian Aprilia and in production since 2009.

Presented in two versions: the R suitable for road use, and the Factory from which the bike participating in the Superbike World Championship , with a higher cost and with competition specifications.

The market segment is maximoto, thus placing itself as the flagship vehicle of the Venetian company and replacing the Aprilia RSV 1000.

The first four-stroke high-displacement sports bike of the Aprilia was the RSV 1000, this vehicle was for a long time the top model among those conceived by the Noale house, obtaining decent results in the Superbike world championship of the early 2000s.

In 2003 prototype was presented RS Cube , destined to compete in the new MotoGP, with cutting-edge technical solutions and hitherto never used on a motorcycle, but the innovations introduced were not enough to compete with the best brands, so that the bike was soon withdrawn from competitions.

For 2015 the RSV4 has enjoyed a major technical upgrade which mainly involved the engine. While maintaining the same characteristic measurements (78 mm of bore and 52.2 mm of stroke) the horses became 201 at 13,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 115 Nm at 10,500 rpm. To achieve this increase in horsepower, while leaving the engine delivery unchanged up to the maximum torque regime, new injectors, new variable-length intake ducts, new cylinder head with redesigned intake and exhaust ducts and combustion chambers were required. through numerical control mechanical processing and no longer by fusion. Redesigned the lubrication system and the exhaust system, revised the electronic management of the valve and now equipped with two lambda sensors. Starting from 2015 the nomenclature of the two versions changes, the Factory becomes RF while the R becomes RR.

From 2005 onwards, however, Aprilia decided to restart research and development on a high-powered vehicle, the result (in 2009) the RSV4, initially conceived to race in the SBK world championship. The result was a 180 HP superbike for a dry weight of only 179 kg capable of generating 115 Nm of torque, which made it a benchmark for the sector and one of the favorite sports bikes among track day. Gas from the start ride-by-wire the traction and wheelie controls only arrived in 2011, included in the APRC package.

Much of the credit is due to the Piaggio Group, which controls the Venetian company, and which invested € 25 million in the project for 3 and a half years, and technicians such as the engineer Claudio Lombardi , known for having given the birthplace of the Lancia Delta world rally champions in the 1980s and 1990s engines Ferrari of Formula 1 in the early 1990s.

The fulcrum was in fact the engine, since previously, those mounted on the Noale superbikes were supplied by the Austrian company Rotax, while that of the RSV4 is completely Italian.

Aprilia RSV Mille

The Aprilia RSV 1000 – called until 2004 with the extended name of RSV Mille, then modified to make it more “international” with the numbers alone – is a motorcycle of the superbike or superbike , marketed (and updated in the various versions) by the of Noale from 1998 to 2008 .

Conceived in 1993 , it went into production only five years later. The intent of the managers and engineers of the Italian company was to build a motorcycle capable of entering a particular market segment, namely that of large-displacement sports bikes, which until then had been dominated almost exclusively by Japanese models, with the exception of made for those produced by Ducati and since 1997 also by MV Agusta.

However, to make this model exclusive, like those produced by the competition, Aprilia chose to use the RSV Mille, to participate in the Superbike World Championship, in which it took part from 1999 to 2002 , but with modest results compared to to the expectations of the eve, also due to the low competitiveness of the Dunlop tires that fitted it; the best result was in fact the 3rd place in the standings of Troy Corser in the 2000 championship.

However, it was only later decided that the RSV Mille should be an extreme sports bike, in fact initially it was a motorcycle, which was more of an ideal compromise, between sport and touring vehicle at the same time. The target was to snatch the market from the Honda VFR, for this purpose, 2001 the Aprilia RST 1000 Futura a sport-touring that used the same engine as the RSV; in addition, another model derived from the RSV, the SL 1000 Falco , had as its direct target another Honda model, the VTR 1000 Firestorm, they were two non-extreme sports bikes equipped with half-fairings.

This motorcycle went into production only five years after its conception, with a failure in sales, especially for what concerns the initial model, that is the 1998 one, probably, this was due to a design.

Despite this, however, with the advent of the RSV, Aprilia managed to offer a complete range of motorcycles: the latter, in fact, covered the only segment in which the Italian factory did not operate. Among other things, it confirmed its sporting vocation and gave a certain continuity to the top models of the various displacements, namely the Aprilia RS, proposed with 50 and 125 cm³ single cylinder and 250 cm³ twin cylinder engines. The latter were all derived from the racing cars that raced (and won) in the world championship , classes and 250.

Basically the RSV took up the same concepts, so as to keep the name (RS) unchanged, and emphasized the company’s philosophy of using sophisticated engines (V, as it was fitted with a V-twin), even for large displacements (1000 or 1000, that is the cubature of the two cylinders).

Even the decision to focus on a two-cylinder engine was not accidental; with the exception of Ducati, all major brands chose to use four-cylinder engines. Aprilia has always used engines from one to two cylinders, using the philosophy of slightly fractionated engines, which therefore also continued with the RSV.

The RSV Mille of 1998 (born in ’93), could count on an advanced technical setting and on the use of absolutely avant-garde light alloys.

Its main qualities were in the engine and the chassis , two very sophisticated devices.

V-twin four-stroke, an angle chosen to optimize fluid dynamics and to make the engine particularly compact. The engine was of the super square (typical solution of racing engines), this guarantees remarkable performances, high rotation speeds and power. The bike was characterized by a particularly manageable delivery, depending on the rider the delivery could be soft or abrupt and rough, but always manageable even by less experienced riders. Given the architecture of the engine, it was necessary to install a double anti-vibration countershaft (AVDC, Aprilia patent) to dampen the vibrations.

The most interesting / particular part of this engine is the distribution and ignition system. The engine used four valves per cylinder, controlled by a double overhead camshaft per bank which in turn was driven by a mixed system of gears and chain. The ignition, on the other hand, was electronic, and used the twin spark, i.e. with two spark plugs per cylinder. Asso Werke pistons were used on the first prototypes, produced from provisional molds initially designed for a Cagiva / Husqvarna single-cylinder which was then no longer produced; Rotax approved such molds, and the final ones, no longer needed, were modified and used to produce the pistons of the in-line 6-cylinder TVR automotive engine.

The power supply was also electronically managed, and made use of one injector per cylinder ( multipoint ). Obviously, being a petrol engine, the injection was indirect (direct injection was not yet used at the time).

The actual displacement was 997.62 cm³, and developed a maximum power to the shaft of 128 horsepower at 9250 rpm, the torque shaft was 10.5 kgm at 7000 rpm.

This liquid-cooled engine was harnessed by a double sloping beam frame, made of aluminum alloy , which was at the same time light and strong and guaranteed the bike remarkable agility and the best torsional rigidity in the category.

Other solutions of interest were the hydraulic control for the clutch, the slipper device (Pneumatic Power Clutch, another Aprilia patent – the RSV was the first production bike to mount an slipper device) and the use of a double pump trochoidal for oil circulation.

3rd generation (2003 to 2005)

The third generation begins in 2003. The power goes to 102Kw (138.7CV) in compliance with the EURO2 regulations, the bike is completely revised, semi-radial brake and clutch controls, a new fairing, the “FACTORY” version, is embellished with forged aluminum rims, mono-shock absorber and Öhlins and carbon. Aesthetically it has been reduced in all its measures to make it more compact, the entire fairing has been redesigned, also following the new aesthetic dictates of the direction indicators incorporated in the front mirrors and rear in the tail, the headlights go from one to two and the tank is resized. The frame is also new, more reactive and with a lower center of gravity, the swingarm becomes double banana to better accommodate the dual exhaust.

The engine is revised, taking the name of Magnesium (from the material in which the clutch crankcase and tappet covers are made, the magnesium). The “Twin Spark” solution is abandoned in the engine, the diameter of the exhaust valves is increased, new camshafts with different monolithic lifts and new stiffer connecting rods are used without increasing their mass, the rev limiter goes up and goes from 10200 rpm at 10600 rpm, the front air intake is also new which allows the engine to breathe which becomes dynamic and with variable geometry.

Aprilia RS125

The RS 125 is one of Aprilia‘s most successful models. It participates in various speed championships, both in the Italian Sport Production Championship. Furthermore, Aprilia has officially dedicated its single-make championship to this model as well as to its twin-displacement sister.

This bike is the evolution of the Aprilia Futura, the last descendant of the AF1 lineage born in the 80s with the Project 108 (name of the rear single-sided project which also saw a legal dispute with Honda which had presented the VFR750R-RC30) and continued with different versions.

RS 125 1988 to 2005

The third generation introduced in 1998 and on the market until 2005 is inspired by the Moto GP model which includes a aerodynamic, with a resized fairing, with the use of a single air intake on the right and more central, narrower fairings without the slots for the radiator and teardrop tail, also for this model different colors and replicas of championship, moreover the type of brake disc is changed, which is now thicker than one millimeter (5 mm instead of 4 mm) but it always remains 320 mm in diameter combined with new five-spoke rims instead of three, always with the respective channels of 3″ at the front and 4″ at the rear.

The Aprilia Rs 125, in order to comply with the European anti-pollution regulations and above all to allow it to be driven by sixteen-year-old new drivers, has come out of the manufacturer since 1995 with significant power limitations of about 30 horsepower and is reduced to 15 to fall within the limits of the driving license A1.

To prevent the introduction of mixture into the thermal group, bottlenecks in the exhaust expansion, electronic limitations given by the absence of the valve actuator control unit and the adoption of a partially fixed capacity valve which no longer acts as a regulator of the expansion resonance, but as an additional rev limiter and torque limiter at high revs.

To regain the power of the bike for use on the track since 1995, Aprilia has put on the market an easy-to-assemble kit (which will later be called Full Power), which included a RAVE valve and a different expansion, this kit it can be used to have a full power 125 exactly as in previous years or as outside Italy.

Aprilia RS 50

The Aprilia RS 50 is the smallest sports model of the Aprilia house, this model like the 125 has changed various liveries over the years by imitating its older sister and also some components.

The second generation, produced from 1997 to 2005, brought the front wheel to 17″, with the larger channels of the two wheels both at the front (2.50″ instead of 2.15″) and the rear (3.00″ instead of 2.75″) and the use of the more traditional double arm suspension thus bringing the transmission and the braking system on two distinct sides of the bike. The frame was also totally changed compared to the first generation.

The fairing became more bulky and voluminous, wanting to replicate the 125/250 grand prix versions. The weight dropped from about 92-93 kg to 89 kg.

The model was initially in competition with others, including Honda with the NSR 50 and the Cagiva Mito 50. The RS 50 was a good compromise between quality and price. Over the years, most of the competitors then disappeared and were subsequently replaced by other equally competitive and modern competitors such as the TZR 50 and GPR 50.
