Aprilia Tuono 1000 Service Manual (2006)

Aprilia created the modern Tuono formula by stripping the bodywork from its RSV Mille superbike, fitting a wide upright handlebar and preserving the engine and chassis performance that made the faired machine competitive. Piaggio Group's official Tuono retrospective traces the line to the RSV Mille Tuono R Limited Edition shown in 2002. That early machine established the idea of a superbike-derived naked motorcycle built around serious chassis performance rather than a detuned roadster layout.

The first major generational change arrived in 2006. Piaggio states that the new model was inspired by the technical and aesthetic changes introduced on the 2004 RSV 1000 R, while the name dropped the older RSV prefix and emphasized the Tuono identity on its own. The Tuono 1000 therefore marked a more mature second phase of the concept: sharper bodywork, a redesigned tail, twin headlights in the compact nose fairing and a chassis package developed from Aprilia's contemporary litre-class sportbike architecture.

At its core was the V990 NG, a liquid-cooled 997.6 cm³ 60-degree V-twin with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Factory dimensions are 97 × 67.5 mm with 11.8 ± 0.5:1 compression. Multipoint electronic injection uses 57 mm throttle bodies, while the powertrain combines dry-sump lubrication, a hydraulically operated wet multi-plate clutch with PPC system, a six-speed gearbox and 16/40 chain final drive. This retained the hard-edged response and mechanical character of a V-twin hypernaked platform while giving the rider a more upright and exposed riding position than the related RSV superbike.

The chassis specification reinforced that connection. A light-alloy twin-spar frame, 43 mm adjustable upside-down fork, adjustable rear monoshock, twin 320 mm front discs and 17-inch wheels gave the motorcycle genuine superbike-derived running gear. Factory dimensions list a 1,410 mm wheelbase, 25-degree steering-head angle, 100 mm trail, 820 mm seat height and 209 kg running-order weight. Piaggio's Tuono history notes that this generation improved agility, weight and power as it evolved, with the higher-specification Factory version using more exotic equipment while retaining the same basic V-twin architecture.

The V-twin Tuono generation remained the basis of Aprilia's large naked line until the next fundamental break in 2011, when the company launched the Tuono V4 R around the 65-degree V4 from the RSV4.
