Aprilia Caponord 1200 / Travel Pack / Rally Service Manual

Aprilia revived the Caponord name in 2013 with the Caponord 1200, a road-oriented large-capacity crossover that followed the earlier ETV 1000 Caponord introduced in 2001. The new generation was not a direct mechanical continuation of the ETV platform: it used a 1,197 cm³ 90-degree V-twin, ride-by-wire electronics and a different chassis concept. Aprilia positioned it for everyday use, fast road riding and long-distance touring rather than as a pure off-road adventure motorcycle. Piaggio’s official 2013 launch material described it as a road enduro intended to combine touring, daily use and sporting road performance.

At launch, the standard model combined 17-inch road wheels with selectable engine maps, two-channel ABS and three-level Aprilia Traction Control. Its 1,197 cm³ twin used four valves per cylinder, dual overhead camshafts and electronic multipoint injection, while the chassis combined die-cast aluminium plates with high-strength steel tubular sections. A 24-litre fuel tank, upright ergonomics and long-travel suspension reinforced its touring role. The overall package was a semi-active adventure-touring motorcycle with a pronounced road bias rather than the large front wheel and off-road emphasis associated with more dirt-oriented adventure machines.

The Travel Pack was the more touring-focused version of the same platform. Aprilia added colour-matched panniers, a centre stand, cruise control and Aprilia Dynamic Damping, or ADD. The semi-active suspension continuously adapted damping to road inputs and riding conditions, while rear spring preload could be managed electronically. At the model’s 2013 introduction, Piaggio highlighted ADD as one of the defining technical features and described the Travel Pack as the configuration aimed most directly at long-distance use with passenger and luggage.

For the 2015 season Aprilia expanded the family with the Rally. Unveiled at Intermot 2014, it moved the Caponord concept further toward mixed-surface travel with a 19-inch spoked front wheel, hard panniers with aluminium covers, a larger windshield, engine protection and auxiliary LED lamps. It retained the core 1,197 cm³ V-twin and the electronic package, including ride-by-wire, traction control, cruise control, ABS and ADD. Piaggio’s official Rally launch release also linked the new version to Aprilia’s more adventurous travel tradition. The Rally name itself echoed the earlier ETV 1000 Caponord Rally Raid, giving the newer model a clear lineage connection to Aprilia’s first Caponord generation.
