Buell XB Models

Buell Motorcycles, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was created in 1983 by ex-Harley-Davidson engineer Erik Buell. Harley-Davidson purchased a 49 percent stake in Buell in 1993, and by 2003, Buell had become a completely owned subsidiary of Harley-Davidson. Buell stated on November 17, 2006, that it has built and shipped its 100,000th motorbike.

The XB powerplant was inspired by the Harley Sportster powertrain and was built for both projects. Unfortunately, Harley designed it with little involvement from Buell. Aerocharger was supposed to supply a turbocharger to assist boost the XB’s horsepower to 150 hp (110 kW), but the agreement fell through when Harley-Davidson opted to design one in-house. Despite millions of dollars invested, that endeavor was a flop.

Before the first XB was sold, the cost was far more than expected, resulting in a price rise from $7,995 to $9,995. It was a popular bike, but it never sold at the predicted volume, owing in part to the much higher price.

Buell first used the XB frame on the Firebolt XB9R sportbike in 2002. The Firebolt XB12R was debuted in 2004, with the smaller displacement Firebolt XB9R. Buell introduced the Lightning in 2003 as a streetfighter motorbike. The XB9 engines were 984 cc (60.05 cu in) in displacement, while the later XB12 engines were 1,203 cc (73.4 cu in).The XB12 engine featured a longer stroke of 96.82 mm (3.812 in) than the XB9 engine, which had a stroke of 79.38 mm (3.125 in). Both engines had the same cylinder bore size of 88.9 mm (3.50 in).

The Buell Ulysses XB12X was introduced in July 2005. Its seating, ergonomics, and long-travel suspension are ideal for usage on unpaved and rugged roads. The Ulysses was marketed by Buell as “the world’s first adventure sportbike.” Among other upgrades for 2008, the XBRR oil pump and ignition timing systems have been altered, as has the inclusion of heated grips and an increase in turning fork swing from 54° to 74°. In various ways, the Ulysses XB12XT varies from the Ulysses XB12X. It sports a different front fender than the XB12X, and the lower fork protection is not as pronounced as on the XB12X, due to the XB12XT’s primary function, which is more street than dirt focused.

Other significant changes between the two motorcycles include suspension, which is nearly an inch lower on the XB12XT and geared more for street riding, against the XB12X’s somewhat higher and softer suspension, which is better designed for dirt use. Along with factory Hepco & Becker hard panniers and top box, a tall windscreen, and a seat height of 30.9 in (785 mm), the XB12XT includes wheels that are around 1 pound (450 g) lighter than those found on the XB12X, which have increased bulk to make them sturdier for off-road use. The XB12XP was a police variant offered for the 2009 model year.

Buell S3/S3T Thunderbolt

Buell Motorcycles, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was created in 1983 by ex-Harley-Davidson engineer Erik Buell. Harley-Davidson purchased a 49 percent stake in Buell in 1993, and by 2003, Buell had become a completely owned subsidiary of Harley-Davidson. Buell stated on November 17, 2006, that it has built and shipped its 100,000th motorbike.

Harley-Davidson announced the termination of the Buell product line on October 15, 2009, as part of its plan to focus on the Harley-Davidson brand. The final Buell motorcycle built by Harley-Davidson occurred on October 30, 2009, bringing the total number produced to 136,923.

Erik Buell announced the launch of Erik Buell Racing in November 2009, an independent company run by Erik Buell that initially produced race-only versions of the 1125R model, then offered an updated 1190RS model for the street or the track, and produced further improved 1190RX and 1190SX models for street or track use.

Buell Motorcycles announced in February 2021 that they will resume manufacture under the new ownership of Erik Buell Racing (EBR). Buell indicated that they will employ the superbike platforms built between 2011 and 2020 to expand their model line to about ten models by 2024. Touring, dirt, adventure, and cruiser versions will be available.

The S3 Thunderbolt sport-touring vehicle was manufactured from 1997 to 2003, along with a mechanically identical S3T “Touring” type that was available until model year 2000. The 1,203 cc air-cooled V-Twin engine was housed in a tubular frame as a stressed member. The engine produced 91 horsepower (68 kW) in 1997 and increased to 101 hp (75 kW) in subsequent years due to improved cam profiles and redesigned Thunderstorm cylinder heads. While the bike’s general appearance remained consistent throughout the model run, major improvements were made in 1999 that distinguished it and later versions from the 1997 and 1998 motorcycles.

The early motorcycles were outfitted with a rectangular section steel rear swingarm, WP Suspension front forks and rear shock, a Keihin 40 mm CV carburetor, and a Performance Machine six-piston front brake caliper. Beginning in 1999, a new cast aluminum rear swingarm, as well as Showa front suspension forks and rear shock, were used. Nissin now manufactured the front brake caliper, which was still a six-piston unit. The most significant technological advancement was the new Dynamic Digital Fuel Injection (DDFI) system, which replaced the previous carburetor.

The S3 had a half fairing that around the headlamp and provided adequate wind protection for the rider’s body. The S3T model then received lower fairing extensions, which improved wind protection for the rider’s legs. The S3T also came with hard saddlebags that could be color-matched to the bike and came in “wide” for optimum capacity or “narrow” for a lighter feel. Aside from the lower fairings and saddlebags, the S3T had a longer handlebar for a more upright, comfortable riding stance. Each of the components that distinguished the S3T were available as extras for the original S3 model.

The S1 Lightning was a more basic sportbike than the S3 Thunderbolt and M2 Cyclone that it was marketed alongside, and manufacture was limited to 5000 units after only three years. The S1 Lightning (1996/1997/1998) and the S1W White Lightning were variants of this Lightning (1998). The S1W had a bigger tank and Thunderstorm cylinder heads, which added 10 horsepower (7.5 kW).

From 1997 until 2003, the M2 Cyclone was manufactured. It was positioned in the center of the Buell lineup, between the minimalist S1 Lightning and the more comfortable but heavier S3 Thunderbolt. The S1 Lightning was quicker and lighter than the others, but the seat was extremely narrow. The S3 Thunderbolt was a heavier touring bike with a larger seat and more comfortable riding posture. With a larger seat than the S1 Lightning and being lighter and quicker than the S3 Thunderbolt, the M2 Cyclone bridged the gap between sport and touring versions. The 1,203 cc engine and five-speed gearbox were the only options for the M2. The frame was made of CrMo steel tubing.

Before the first XB was sold, the cost was far more than expected, resulting in a price rise from $7,995 to $9,995. It was a popular bike, but it never sold at the predicted volume for the Harley marketing department, owing in part to the much higher price.

Buell first used the XB frame on the Firebolt XB9R sportbike in 2002. The Firebolt XB12R was debuted in 2004, with the lower displacement Firebolt XB9R. Buell introduced the Lightning in 2003 as a streetfighter motorbike. The XB9 engines were 984 cc (60.05 cu in) in displacement, while the later XB12 engines were 1,203 cc (73.4 cu in). The XB12 engine featured a longer stroke of 96.82 mm (3.812 in) than the XB9 engine, which had a stroke of 79.38 mm (3.125 in). Both engines had the same cylinder bore size of 88.9 mm (3.50 in).

The Buell Ulysses XB12X was introduced in July 2005. It included seating, ergonomics, and long-travel suspension that were appropriate for usage on unpaved and rugged roads. The Ulysses was marketed by Buell as “the world’s first adventure sportbike.” Among other changes for 2008, the XBRR oil pump and ignition timing systems have been changed, as has the addition of heated grips and an increase in turning fork swing from 54° to 74°. In various ways, the Ulysses XB12XT varies from the Ulysses XB12X. It features a different front fender than the XB12X, and the lower fork protection is not as pronounced as on the XB12X, due to the XB12XT’s primary function, which is more street than dirt orientated.

Other significant differences between the two motorcycles include the suspension, which is nearly an inch lower on the XB12XT and set more for street riding, against the XB12X’s somewhat higher and softer suspension, which is better designed for dirt use. Along with factory Hepco & Becker hard panniers and top box, a tall windscreen, and a 30.9 in (785 mm) seat height, the XB12XT includes wheels that are around 1 pound (450 g) lighter than those found on the XB12X, which have increased bulk to make them sturdier for off-road usage. The XB12XP is a police model that was launched in 2009 for the model year.
