The S1 Lightning line was succeeded by the X1 Lightning. They all had Thunderstorm heads, fuel injection (Dynamic Digital Fuel Injection), bigger fuel tanks, and radically new body designs. The brushed aluminum tail section that curled upward and back behind the two-up seat was the most identifiable frame element.

Buell P3 Blast

The Buell Blast is a motorbike produced by the Buell Motorcycle Company between 2000 and 2009.

The Blast was designed as an entry-level motorbike to introduce beginners to motorcycles in general and Harley-Davidson in particular. As a result, the design objectives were cheap cost as well as ease of operation and maintenance. These objectives can be met by employing an automatically tensioned belt final drive, self-adjusting hydraulic valve lifters, and a carburetor with an automated choke. The engine design was inspired by Harley-Evolution Davidson’s Sportster engine, however the rear cylinder was removed. Surlyn, a polymer used to produce the outer of golf balls, was utilized to make the Blast’s plastic bodywork components, which protect the surfaces when the Blast is dropped.

The Blast was utilized in the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge New Rider program, which is identical to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic “RiderCourse.”

Prior to stopping all motorcycle manufacture in July 2009, Buell aired an ad campaign indicating that the Buell Blast will no longer be available in their lineup. The advertisement showed a Buell Blast being crushed in an automotive crusher. A limited quantity of smashed Blast cubes were available for purchase in 2010 upon request. Erik Buell autographed and numbered each one. They were available in Battle Blue, Midnight Black, and Sunfire Yellow.

Buell Firebolt XB9R/XB12R

The XB powerplant was based on the Harley Sportster powertrain and was intended for both projects. Unfortunately, Harley designed it with little assistance from Buell. Aerocharger was supposed to supply a turbocharger to assist boost the XB’s horsepower to 150 hp (110 kW), but the agreement fell through when Harley-Davidson opted to design one in-house. Despite “millions of dollars” spent, that endeavor was a flop.

Before the first XB was sold, the cost was far more than expected, resulting in a price rise from $7,995 to $9,995. It was a popular bike, but it never sold at the predicted volume for the Harley marketing department, owing in part to the much higher price.

Buell first used the XB frame on the Firebolt XB9R sportbike in 2002. The Firebolt XB12R was debuted in 2004, with the lower displacement Firebolt XB9R. Buell introduced the Lightning in 2003 as a streetfighter motorbike. The XB9 engines were 984 cc (60.05 cu in) in displacement, while the later XB12 engines were 1,203 cc (73.4 cu in). The XB12 engine featured a longer stroke of 96.82 mm (3.812 in) than the XB9 engine, which had a stroke of 79.38 mm (3.125 in). Both engines had the same cylinder bore size of 88.9 mm (3.50 in).

The Buell Ulysses XB12X was introduced in July 2005. It included seating, ergonomics, and long-travel suspension that were appropriate for usage on unpaved and rugged roads. The Ulysses was marketed by Buell as “the world’s first adventure sportbike.” Among other changes for 2008, the XBRR oil pump and ignition timing systems have been changed, as has the addition of heated grips and an increase in turning fork swing from 54° to 74°. In various ways, the Ulysses XB12XT varies from the Ulysses XB12X. It features a different front fender than the XB12X, and the lower fork protection is not as pronounced as on the XB12X, due to the XB12XT’s primary function, which is more street than dirt orientated.

Other significant differences between the two motorcycles include the suspension, which is nearly an inch lower on the XB12XT and set more for street riding, against the XB12X’s somewhat higher and softer suspension, which is better designed for dirt use. Along with factory Hepco & Becker hard panniers and top box, a tall windscreen, and a 30.9 in (785 mm) seat height, the XB12XT includes wheels that are around 1 pound (450 g) lighter than those found on the XB12X, which have increased bulk to make them sturdier for off-road usage. The XB12XP is a police model that was launched in 2009 for the model year.

Buell 1125

The Buell 1125R is a sport bike manufactured in the United States by Buell Motorcycle Company. It went on sale in July 2007 for the 2008 model year. Production of street-legal 1125Rs, as well as other Buell variants, halted in October 2009. Erik Buell Racing, founded by Buell creator Erik Buell in November 2009, initially created race-only versions of the 1125R.

The 1125R is powered by an Austrian BRP-Powertrain (Rotax) 1,125 cc (68.7 cu in) Helicon V-twin engine. The liquid-cooled engine has a 72° V angle and develops 146 horsepower (109 kW) at a maximum rpm of 10,500. Motorcycle Consumer News measured 127.1 horsepower (94.8 kW) and 71.1 lbft (96.4 Nm) at the rear wheel, whereas Cycle World measured 134.0 hp (99.9 kW) at 9,800 rpm and 75.9 lbft (102.9 Nm) at 8,300 rpm. Top speeds were stated to be 158 and 161 mph (254 and 259 km/h), with 0 to 14 mile (0.00 to 0.40 km) timings of 10.51 and 10.39 seconds at 134.32 and 134.09 mph (216.17 and 215.80 km/h).

The Helicon engine’s 72° configuration distinguishes it from Buell’s earlier V-twins, which were based on 45° air-cooled Harley-Davidson Sportster engines upgraded for increased efficiency and output.

The 1125R features a variety of unusual design elements. The gasoline tank is housed in the innovative frame design. The ZTL2 single-piston front brake features a 375 mm (14.8 in) inverted rotor that is directly linked to the front wheel rim. Buell was able to create a front end that was lighter and more responsive than traditional designs as a result of this. For increased volume, the bike also has an exhaust under the engine. Buell’s fundamental design goal of mass centralization is supported by the frame, front end, and exhaust. Instead of a drive chain, the 1125R employs a drive belt that requires no maintenance or adjustment.
