About the Buell XB12S and XB9S
Buell used the Lightning name well before the XB generation, beginning with the original S1 Lightning in the mid-1990s. The XB-era streetfighter arrived for the 2003 model year as the XB9S, using the same compact architecture introduced on the XB9R Firebolt but with an upright handlebar, lower footpegs and stripped-back bodywork. The platform embodied Erik Buell’s mass-centralization ideas: fuel was carried in the aluminum frame, engine oil in the swingarm and the front brake used Buell’s large perimeter-mounted rotor. Cycle World’s 2002 XB9S introduction documents the model’s launch and its relationship to the Firebolt.
For 2004 the XB12S expanded the Lightning concept with Buell’s 1,203 cc V-twin. The larger engine retained the short-wheelbase XB chassis but delivered substantially more torque, giving the Lightning a stronger road-focused character without abandoning the compact dimensions that defined the range. Both the 984 cc and 1,203 cc versions used air-cooled 45-degree V-twins, Dynamic Digital Fuel Injection, five-speed transmissions and belt final drive, making the Lightning family a distinctive alternative to conventional multi-cylinder naked sport motorcycles.
Buell then broadened the family around different riding positions and chassis proportions. The XB9SX CityX arrived for 2005 as a more urban, supermoto-influenced version of the 984 cc Lightning, adding a taller seat, crossbar handlebar, handguards, headlight grille and Pirelli Scorpion Sync tyres. The XB12Scg lowered the 1,203 cc platform for riders wanting reduced seat height, while the XB12Ss Lightning Long stretched the wheelbase and increased fuel capacity to improve room and everyday versatility. Cycle World described the Long as a new 2006 derivative intended to give taller riders and passengers more space while preserving the Lightning identity.
By 2007 the Lightning range covered several distinct interpretations of the same fuel-in-frame V-twin streetfighter. Harley-Davidson’s official Buell VIN documentation identifies the XB9SX CityX, XB12S, XB12Scg, XB12Ss Long and the late XB12STT Super TT as 2007 Lightning variants. The CityX remained the 984 cc model, while the S, Scg and Ss used the 1,203 cc engine; the Ss also received a longer 1,372 mm wheelbase and a larger 16.7-litre fuel capacity compared with the 1,320 mm / 14.5-litre layout of the other models. See Harley-Davidson’s official 2007 Buell Lightning model/VIN catalog.
This 661-page factory publication, part 99490-07Y, specifically documents the 2007 XB9SX, XB12S, XB12Scg and XB12Ss. Although the XB12STT was also sold during 2007, it is absent from this publication’s internal model table and service procedures and is therefore not represented as covered here. Related publications are grouped in the Buell Lightning service manual catalog.
