About the Buell XB12S and XB9S
Buell had already established the XB Lightning platform by the middle of the 2000s. The original XB9S had launched for the 2003 model year as the upright, stripped-back counterpart to the XB9R Firebolt, introducing the compact streetfighter format that defined the family: fuel carried inside the aluminum frame, engine oil in the swingarm, a very short wheelbase and Buell’s large perimeter-mounted front brake. In 2004 the XB12S added the longer-stroke 1,203 cm³ V-twin, giving the same compact chassis a much stronger torque delivery while preserving the mass-centralized XB layout.
For 2005 Buell broadened the Lightning range with the XB9SX CityX and the lowered XB12Scg. The CityX used the 984 cm³ engine but adopted a more urban and supermoto-influenced presentation with translucent bodywork, a headlight grille, handguards and Pirelli Scorpion Sync tyres. The XB12Scg paired the 1,203 cm³ engine with a much lower seat height, making the big-bore Lightning more accessible without changing the core engine and frame architecture. These models established the variety that Buell would expand further for 2006.
The 2006 model year brought one of the more significant updates to the early XB family. Buell introduced the XB12Ss Lightning Long, extending the wheelbase from 1,320 mm to 1,372 mm and increasing fuel capacity from 14.5 to 16.7 litres to create more room for taller riders and passengers. At the same time, all 2006 Lightning and Firebolt models received a lighter, stiffer swingarm, a revised transmission and a redesigned intake system. A contemporary Buell press release described the 2006 range as an evolution of the XB platform and identified the Lightning family as XB9SX CityX, XB12S, XB12Scg and the new XB12Ss. See Buell’s 2006 model announcement reproduced by Roadracing World.
Mechanically, the range shared the same fuel-in-frame V-twin streetfighter philosophy. The XB9SX used the 984 cm³ engine with a 45 mm intake, while the XB12S, XB12Scg and XB12Ss used the 1,203 cm³ engine with a 49 mm intake. All used DDFI fuel injection, five-speed transmissions and belt final drive. The Ss differed most clearly in chassis dimensions and capacity: a 54-inch wheelbase, 22-degree rake, 119 mm trail and 16.7-litre fuel tank versus the 52-inch wheelbase and 14.5-litre tank of the other variants. Harley-Davidson’s official 2006 Buell service information confirms those four Lightning models and their model-specific dimensions: 2006 Lightning VIN and model codes.
This factory publication, part 99490-06Y, documents the 2006 XB9SX CityX, XB12S, XB12Scg and XB12Ss Lightning Long. Its internal VIN table explicitly assigns 2006 model codes to all four variants. Related manuals are grouped in the Buell Lightning service manual catalog.
