About the Buell Firebolt / Lightning / Ulysses
Buell created the XB platform around a compact sport-motorcycle architecture first introduced with the Firebolt XB9R for the 2002 model year. The aluminum twin-spar frame carried the fuel, engine oil was stored in the swingarm, the exhaust was positioned beneath the engine, and the front brake used Buell’s perimeter-mounted rotor. Cycle World’s original XB9R technical preview documented how the 52-inch-wheelbase concept and mass-centralization philosophy shaped this new generation.
The family expanded quickly. The Lightning XB9S arrived for 2003 as a naked, more upright streetfighter interpretation of the same platform, retaining the compact chassis and 984 cm³ Thunderstorm V-twin. Buell then introduced 1,203 cm³ XB12 versions and progressively diversified the range into lower-seat, longer-wheelbase and urban variants. The resulting Firebolt and Lightning branches shared the same basic air-cooled fuel-in-frame XB platform while using different ergonomics, suspension layouts and bodywork to serve different road-riding roles.
The XB architecture also became the basis for the Ulysses line. Developed from modified Lightning prototypes, the XB12X combined the 1,203 cm³ Thunderstorm engine with longer-travel suspension, increased ground clearance, upright ergonomics and touring capability. Cycle World’s 2005 Ulysses feature documented that development path. For 2008, Buell added the more road-oriented XB12XT to the Ulysses family, while official 2008 VIN records still listed the XB12S and XB12STT among the broader XB lineup. Harley-Davidson’s 2008 Buell documentation records that configuration.
For 2009, the factory lineup changed again. Harley-Davidson’s official 2009 Buell XB catalog lists the XB9SX, XB12R, XB12Scg, XB12Ss, XB12X, XB12XP and XB12XT. Compared with the 2008 VIN list, the XB12S and XB12STT were no longer present, while the XB12XP police model appeared in the Ulysses branch. The XB9SX retained the 984 cm³ engine, while the six XB12 models used the 1,203 cm³ version. Across the family, DDFI electronic fuel injection, a five-speed transmission and toothed-belt final drive remained central elements of the XB design.
This listing corresponds specifically to factory publication 99490-09Y for those seven 2009 XB models. The manual’s own VIN table assigns model-year code 9 to 2009 and lists the same seven variants. Related publications are grouped in the Buell service manual catalog, including the Firebolt, Lightning and Ulysses sections.
