Kawasaki ZRX 1200R/S
From 2001 until 2007, the Kawasaki ZRX1200R was a standard/naked motorcycle produced in Japan. It was offered in the United States until 2005, and in Europe until 2007. It was modified in 2008 with a six-speed gearbox and fuel injection, and it was remained offered as the ZRX1200 DAEG model in Japan until 2016. It is a development of the ZRX1100, a stylized reproduction of the 1982 “Eddie Lawson Replica” KZ1000R, a motorbike made famous by the same-named superbike racing champion. Kawasaki‘s ambition with the ZRX1200R was to create a motorbike with the performance of a current motorcycle while maintaining a design comparable to the original Eddie Lawson Replica.
The ZRX1200 was offered in three configurations worldwide: the ZRX1200S, which was slightly faired; the ZRX1200R, which had a bikini fairing; and the ZRX1200C, which had no fairing. In contrast to sport bikes, complete handlebars constructed of tubular aluminum are used. The saddle has more than one centimeter of cushioning between the seat covering and the pan for comfort. The foot pegs are positioned similarly to those seen on conventional motorcycles, producing a sitting posture evocative of the iconic Universal Japanese Motorcycle (UJM).
The frame is made of standard steel tubing, and the engine is supported by a retractable cradle. The suspension design is comparable to that of a UJM. The rear shocks, which have a piggyback reservoir, are preload and damping adjustable. The front suspension is made out of standard forks with adjustable damping and preload. The strengthened swing arm was created to look like the modified/aftermarket swingarms that were popular in the 1970s.
The engine is a liquid-cooled 1164cc inline 4-cylinder. Four 36mm Keihin Constant Velocity carburetors provide induction. The exhaust system is a stainless steel 4-into-1 unit. Vehicles made prior to 2004 have black exhaust systems with the exception of the muffler; models produced after 2004 have polished exhaust systems with the exception of the muffler.
