Ducati 996

From 1999, there were three Ducati 996 models: the basic, or Biposto; the 996S with hlins suspension; and the 996SPS (Europe only), which featured a more powerful engine and was lighter due to titanium and carbon fiber components. The 996R succeeded the 996SPS in 2001 and used the new 998 cc (60.9 cu in) Testastretta engine. There was also the 748, which had less power.

The 996 was equipped with larger 98 mm (3.9 in) pistons, larger valves, a stronger crankshaft, and crankcases ported from the 916 SPS. However, because the 916 camshaft had a gentler, less peaky power delivery and less top-end power (83.5 kW (112.0 hp) against the SPS’s 92.4 kW (123.9 hp)) The 996 received a redesigned air intake system and two fuel injectors per cylinder. The redesigned design also included a new airbox and a unique underseat exhaust system. The chassis has also been altered. Lighter wheels were adopted, as well as stronger calipers, discs, and pads compared to the 916. The suspension system remained the same Showa design, but both the front and rear damping and preload were completely adjustable.

The wheels changed and were replaced to all new Marchesini wheels in 2000. To alleviate stiction, the front forks were additionally titanium nitrided. The spokes were also altered from the 916’s three-spoke rim design to a new five-spoke arrangement. Another update in 2001 saw the 996 rear shock absorber go from Showa to hlins.

The 996 was replaced by the Ducati 998 in 2002.
