Ducati 748/916 Service Manual (1994-2002)

Ducati introduced the 916 in 1994 as the successor to the 851/888 superbike line and as a major new expression of the company’s road-racing identity. Designed under Massimo Tamburini at the Cagiva Research Centre, the 916 combined a compact steel-trellis chassis with a liquid-cooled Desmoquattro L-twin, a single-sided swingarm, twin under-seat exhausts and tightly integrated bodywork. Ducati’s own 916 heritage page describes the model as a defining point in the evolution of Ducati design, where styling, engineering and performance were brought together in a single motorcycle.

The road-going 916 used a 916 cm³, four-valve desmodromic twin developed from the earlier 888 architecture. Its 94 mm bore and 66 mm stroke, fuel injection and race-derived chassis made it both a technical and visual reference point for Ducati’s 1990s superbikes. The platform quickly expanded into several versions, including the standard Strada and Biposto, the higher-output Sport Production, and the Senna editions. Ducati’s official Senna history records how Ayrton Senna personally approved the original 916 Senna project in 1994, with the first limited production series appearing the following winter and later series following in 1997 and 1998.

The smaller-capacity 748 used essentially the same chassis and bodywork concept but paired it with a shorter-stroke 748 cm³ Desmoquattro engine. The 88 mm bore and 61.5 mm stroke allowed a higher rev ceiling than the 916, giving the motorcycle a distinctly different engine character while retaining the same compact ergonomics and single-sided-swingarm layout. The range included Strada/Monoposto and Biposto road versions together with the more highly tuned Sport Production model. Contemporary Cycle World coverage of the 748 noted that the SP had already established a strong European Supersport racing reputation by the mid-1990s.

Together, the 748 and 916 formed a closely related Tamburini-era Ducati superbike platform. They shared the trellis-frame architecture, desmodromic four-valve engine layout, dry clutch, six-speed transmission, chain final drive and characteristic under-seat exhaust styling, but differed in displacement, power delivery and some model-specific chassis and engine details. The 916 was eventually superseded by the 996, while the 748 line continued as Ducati’s smaller-displacement member of the same design family before the later 749 generation replaced it.
