About the Ducati M900
Ducati unveiled the Monster 900 at the Cologne motorcycle show on 2 October 1992 and put it into production in 1993. The concept was deliberately simple: strip away the bodywork and leave the essential mechanical parts exposed. Ducati’s official Monster 900 heritage history describes how designer Miguel Galluzzi combined an 851/888-derived tubular trellis frame with the air/oil-cooled 904 cm³ engine from the Supersport family. That mixture of superbike-style chassis hardware and a torquey two-valve engine created a motorcycle that helped define the modern naked-bike category.
The original M900 used Ducati’s air-cooled Desmodue 90-degree L-twin, with a 92 mm bore and 68 mm stroke for 904 cm³. In the carbureted specification documented by this workshop manual, the engine uses twin 38 mm Mikuni constant-vacuum carburetors, belt-driven desmodromic valve gear, a dry multi-plate clutch and a six-speed gearbox. The steel trellis frame, wide handlebar, exposed engine and minimal bodywork made the mechanical components part of the motorcycle’s visual identity. Ducati’s own period specifications list about 73 hp and a top speed near 190 km/h for the early Monster 900.
The Monster 900 also established the template from which an entire family developed. Ducati expanded the range with the smaller Monster 600 in 1995 and the 750 in 1996, while the 900 remained the flagship of the air-cooled line. Ducati’s official Monster chronology records new 900 derivatives for 1998, including the Monster 900 Cromo and Monster 900 S. These variants kept the core chassis and Desmodue character while broadening the family beyond the original standard model.
The first-generation 900 evolved substantially without abandoning its basic air-cooled trellis-frame naked bike formula. By 2000 Ducati had introduced electronic fuel injection on the Monster 900, marking a major technical break from the carbureted configuration shown in this manual. The larger Monster line later moved toward the S4, S2R and eventually completely redesigned generations, but the original M900 remained the reference point for the model’s proportions, exposed chassis and road-focused character. Ducati has continued to describe the Monster as a combination of sporting engine, superbike-derived chassis, wide handlebars and no fairing.
This factory workshop publication is specifically titled “Monster M 900 desmodue” and documents the carbureted 904 cm³ configuration. Related publications are available in the Ducati Monster M900 service manual catalog.
