About the Ducati 888

Ducati developed the 888 from the Desmoquattro architecture introduced by the 851, the motorcycle that brought liquid cooling, four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection together in a production Ducati V-twin. Ducati’s 851 Tricolore heritage history identifies the 851 as the first representative of this new high-performance generation. Increasing capacity to 888 cm³ gave Ducati a stronger engine for both racing and road use while retaining the steel trellis frame, desmodromic valve gear and fuel-injected 90-degree L-twin layout that defined the platform.

The 888 became central to Ducati’s World Superbike success. The factory 888 F91 dominated the 1991 championship, winning 23 of 26 races and taking both riders’ and manufacturers’ titles with Doug Polen, while the 888 F92 followed with another manufacturers’ championship in 1992. Ducati’s official 888 F91 and 888 F92 histories document that period. Those racing results reinforced the 888’s identity as a Desmoquattro superbike platform rather than simply a larger-capacity development of the 851.

The road range translated that competition background into several distinct configurations. The Strada was the road-oriented version, retaining the 888 cm³ four-valve engine and fully faired superbike chassis. The SPO, short for Sport Production Omologato, was aimed particularly at the US market and combined road equipment with hardware influenced by Ducati’s homologation specials. In a 1993 comparison test, Cycle World described the 888 SPO as a direct descendant of Ducati’s championship-winning 851/888 racers and measured 94 rear-wheel horsepower with a 152 mph top speed.

The SP5 represented the most focused production evolution of the 888 family covered by this workshop manual. The factory service data distinguishes its engine specification from the Strada/SPO setup, including higher quoted output and a higher maximum engine speed, while retaining the 94 × 64 mm dimensions and Weber I.A.W. electronic injection architecture. By this stage the 888 had reached the end of its development cycle. Ducati unveiled the 916 at the Milan Motorcycle Show in October 1993, and the company’s 916 heritage history presents it as the next major evolution of Ducati’s superbike DNA.

This factory workshop publication applies specifically to the three variants named by Ducati on its cover: 888 Strada, 888 Sport Production Omologato and 888 Sport Production Special. Related documentation is available in the Ducati 888 service manual catalog.
