Suzuki GSX-R 1000

The Suzuki GSX-R1000 is a sport bike in Suzuki‘s GSX-R motorcycle series. It was debuted in 2001 to replace the GSX-R1100 and is powered by a 988 cc (60.3 cu in) inline four-cylinder, four-stroke engine that is liquid-cooled.

2007 (K7, K8)

Suzuki unveiled a drastically redesigned GSX-R1000 for 2007 at the Paris Motor Show on September 22, 2006. Due to its new exhaust system and stricter pollution requirements, the new bike added 14 lb (6.4 kg) over the 2006 model. Suzuki claimed enhanced aerodynamics, a quicker revving engine, and a bigger throttle body to offset the weight gain. The engine and chassis have been overhauled, although the vehicle is not entirely new. It also had three distinct engine mapping setups, which could be changed using two buttons on the right handlebar. To cycle between Mode A (unrestricted), Mode B (limited power until 50% throttle is applied), and Mode C, use the up and down arrows (reduced power throughout the rpm regardless of throttle application). It also got a hydraulic clutch.

The 2007 model was carried over to 2008 with no notable changes.

2009 (K9, L1)

The 2009 GSX-R1000 is an underappreciated litre bike that still packs a punch, despite being called a bit of a dog owing to its K9 designation and perceived lack of performance and technology when compared to its rivals. Fortunately for used bike purchasers, its unpopularity means that costs for this surprisingly practical, yet blisteringly fast, Japanese sportsbike are low.

The K9’s motor, now in its third generation, was totally overhauled for 2009 in an effort to make it more compact, allowing Suzuki to lengthen the swingarm for more traction. The front-to-back length of the inline four was reduced by 60mm by lowering the distance between the gearbox shaft and crankshaft, as seen on the GSX-R600 and GSX-R750. The inline four’s capacity remains at 999cc (it’s technically 0.4cc larger than the previous model, which was 998.6cc), but the K9 has a 1mm wider bore at 74.5mm and 1.7mm shorter stroke, as well as new shaped piston crowns, 1mm larger titanium valves (now with double valve springs), and an increase in compression ratio from 12.5:1 to 12.8:1. It wasn’t exactly sluggish, with a reported 182bhp and 81ftlb of torque!

2005 (K5, K6)

The engine and chassis of the 2005 GSX-R1000 were redesigned. It weighed 4.4 lb (2.0 kg) less than the previous model, yet the engine had a higher piston displacement of 11 cc (0.67 cu in). It had a completely redesigned frame that reduced the entire length of the bike by 1.6 in (41 mm) while only lowering the wheelbase by 0.02 in (0.51 mm). At the front, there were new brakes with radial mounted calipers and 310 mm (12.2 in) discs. The new titanium silencer (catalytic in Europe) was reported to be designed to minimize turbulence. This model weights just 365 pounds dry, placing it towards the top of the power-to-weight ratio rankings. This weight reduction came at the expense of durability difficulties, with frame breaking reported in 2005-2006 versions.

The tested wet weight of the 2005 model is 444 lb (201 kg). The power output is 147.3 horsepower (109.8 kW) and the max torque is 75.4 ftlbf (102.2 Nm), both at the rear wheel. In addition, in 2005, Suzuki replaced the brand’s complete name with a single “S” emblem on the tank of all models.

With the exception of a minor cosmetic tweaks, the 2005 model was carried over to 2006. The highest speed of the 2006 model was measured to be 178 mph (286 km/h).

2003 (K3, K4)

After three years on the roads and racing tracks, Suzuki released a new version of the GSX-R1000 in late September 2002. Suzuki engineers had been working on the three factors that contributed to a fast bike’s speed: weight, power, and handling. The GSX-R1000 from 2003 was enhanced in all three areas. It was lighter, had more power and torque, and handled better.

The bike’s physical dimensions were nearly identical to the previous year’s model. The seat height and total height were somewhat reduced, but the geometry of the bike remained same. The already robust aluminum alloy frame was redesigned and reinforced with internal ribs, and the headlamp and tail fairing were modified. The frame and wheels had both been black-coated.

The front brakes have also been replaced. Suzuki opted to forego the six-piston brakes. The redesigned radially placed four-piston calipers are 30 grams lighter and grip smaller 300 mm (11.8 in) discs, saving another 300 g. (11 oz). Suzuki claims that the redesigned brakes, although being smaller, give superior stopping and turn-in performance.

The headlights of the 2003 GSX-R1000 were positioned vertically to allow the front ram-air intakes to be moved 20 mm (0.79 in) closer to the bike’s centerline. The new design was heavily influenced by the Hayabusa‘s appearance. The instruments, too, were altered.

The engine’s cylinder displacement remained unchanged at 988 cc (60.3 cu in), but more power/torque and better throttle response were obtained by adding four ventilation holes between the cylinders to equalize crankcase pressure beneath the pistons, moving the air intake closer to the centerline, and upgrading the engine management system from a 16-bit to a 32-bit ECU. To save an additional 1.32 lb (0.60 kg), the complete exhaust system was built of titanium, and the tail light was replaced with LEDs.

The 2003 model was carried over to 2004 with no notable changes.

2001 (K1, K2)

Suzuki debuted a new GSX-R model in 2001, replacing the GSX-R1100, the largest and most powerful model in the GSX-R series, with the all-new GSX-R1000. The engine’s cylinder displacement was around 1,000 cc (61 cu in), which was approximately 100 cc less than its predecessor. Although it shared many characteristics with its smaller sibling, the GSX-R1000 was not simply an expanded version of the GSX-R750. The mainframe in both variants is the identical, however the material utilized on the big brother is.5 mm (0.020 in) thicker. Suzuki stated that the frame’s torsional stiffness has risen by 10% over the GSX-R750.

The engine in the GSX-R1000 was a revised GSX-R750 engine. The R1000 had a 1 mm (0.04 in) larger bore and a 13 mm (0.51 in) longer stroke, as well as freshly designed pistons with a lower crown and a gear-driven counter balancer. The engine weighed 130 lb (59 kg), making it somewhat heavier than the 750 engine but 31 lb (14 kg) less than the GSX1300R engine. The engine produces a maximum of 160 bhp (119 kW) at 9,500 rpm when measured on the crank and 143 horsepower (107 kW) when tested on the rear wheel, with minor variances between various instances of the same model.

The redline has been adjusted to 12,000 rpm. The engine’s maximum torque is 80 ftlbf (108 Nm) at 8,000 rpm. The GSX-R1000 has a peak speed of 173 mph (278 km/h), a 1/4 mile pace of 10.1 seconds at 141.7 mph (228.0 km/h), and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3 seconds when combined with a total (dry) weight of 374 lb (170 kg).

The use of titanium for the exhaust downpipe (K1 model link pipe is black, K2 model link pipe is polished titanium) and the inside of the silencer allowed the 1000s exhaust system to be 4 lb (1.8 kg) lighter than the 750. Titanium was also utilized to coat the stanchions of the front fork (titanium-nitride). Inside the exhaust pipe, an exhaust tuning valve had been installed. The system used a servo to dynamically regulate the exhaust backpressure based on engine speed, throttle position, and gear selection for improved torque, reduced emissions, and lower noise—the (stock) exhaust noise of the GSX-R1000 is noticeably lower than that of the GSX-R600.

The 1998 Yamaha YZF-R1 was ultimately surpassed by the 2001 edition of the GSX-R1000, which was lighter and more powerful.

The 2001 model was carried over to 2002 with very minor alterations. Modifications to the fuel pump, clutch, front axle, torque link, mirrors, and luggage hooks were made in 2002. The manual fast-idle implementation was replaced by a computer-controlled implementation (the “STV servo”). New colors, as well as new GSXR stickers.
