Buell XB Models Service Manual (2008)

Buell introduced the XB platform with the Firebolt generation for the 2002 model year, using a compact chassis built around mass centralization and several unconventional engineering choices. Fuel was carried in the aluminum frame, engine oil in the swingarm, and the perimeter-mounted Zero Torsional Load front brake reduced unsprung mass at the wheel. The XB architecture quickly expanded beyond the original Firebolt. The range later grew to include 1,203 cc XB12 derivatives and more specialized Lightning versions such as the CityX, Scg, Ss and Super TT.

The Ulysses branch extended the platform in another direction. Developed from Lightning-based prototypes, the XB12X combined the XB chassis concept with longer-travel suspension, increased ground clearance, an upright riding position and provisions for touring luggage. Cycle World's 2005 Ulysses feature traces that development into the 2006 XB12X. By 2008, the road-oriented XB12XT had joined the family with lower suspension, a lower seat, sport-touring tires, increased wind protection and standard luggage, broadening the Ulysses idea toward paved-road touring.

The 2008 factory lineup represented a mature stage of the air-cooled V-twin sport platform.
