About the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 4V 1200 ABS

Moto Guzzi unveiled the Stelvio 1200 at EICMA 2007 and presented the production motorcycle to the international press in Siena in March 2008. Named after the Alpine Stelvio Pass, it was Moto Guzzi’s entry into the growing large-capacity adventure-touring class. The new model retained the company’s defining transverse 90-degree V-twin and shaft-drive architecture but placed it in a tall, long-travel chassis with upright ergonomics, 19-inch front wheel and substantial weather protection. Piaggio Group’s official Moto Guzzi history records the 2007 preview and 2008 press launch.

The original Stelvio 4V 1200 ABS generation used Moto Guzzi’s 1151 cc big-block engine with air/oil cooling, a six-speed gearbox and cardan final drive. The chassis combined a high-strength tubular-steel frame with a 45 mm adjustable upside-down fork, 170 mm of front travel and a progressive-link monoshock rear suspension with 155 mm of travel. Twin 320 mm radial-caliper front brakes, electronic fuel injection and long-distance ergonomics made the Stelvio a road-focused adventure machine with genuine touring capability rather than a lightweight enduro. In period form it established the basic character of Moto Guzzi’s Italian shaft-drive adventure tourer.

The range broadened in 2009 with the Stelvio NTX. Piaggio’s historical account identifies the NTX as the model that brought ABS into the maxi-enduro line and describes it as the first major development of the Quattrovalvole engine, including revised camshafts. The NTX also moved the Stelvio further toward expedition use through additional protection and touring equipment while preserving the same basic transverse V-twin, six-speed transmission and shaft-drive platform. This broadened the Stelvio from a distinctive road-biased adventure motorcycle into a more complete long-range family.

By 2010 the four-valve Stelvio platform had reached its mature pre-redesign form, with standard, ABS and NTX configurations documented across the model family. A clear generational break followed at EICMA 2010, when Moto Guzzi presented the new Stelvio 1200 8V and Stelvio 1200 NTX models that would be road-launched in 2011. The later generation brought major changes including revised bodywork and, for the 2011 production range, a much larger 32-litre fuel tank. Piaggio Group’s 2011 Stelvio 8V launch release documents that transition.

This product covers the 2008-2010 pre-8V Stelvio 4V 1200 ABS generation documented by factory Service Station Manual 895790. The manual itself is a 2010 publication but uses a generic model-year field, so the catalog range is based on the verified production-generation boundary rather than on copyright date alone. Later 8V Stelvio models should be matched to their corresponding service information. Related workshop publications are grouped in the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 4V 1200 ABS service manual catalog.
