About the Honda CBR900RR and Fireblade
Honda launched the CBR900RR in 1992 around the “Total Control” idea: combine superbike-level acceleration with the mass and compactness of a much smaller motorcycle. Honda’s own history records that the original 893 cc inline-four was developed from a 750 cc research platform and installed in a chassis with a dry weight of only 185 kg. The result established the Fireblade as a new reference point for large-capacity sport bikes, prioritising low weight, compact dimensions and rider control rather than simply chasing the largest engine capacity. See Honda’s official CBR900RR Fireblade history.
The first major refinement came in 1994, but the 1996 model marked a more substantial mechanical step. Honda increased displacement from 893 cc to 918 cc and raised maximum output to 128 PS while preserving the basic lightweight concept. For the 1996-1997 specification, the factory manual lists a 71.0 × 58.0 mm bore and stroke, 11.0:1 compression ratio, four 38 mm constant-velocity carburetors, a six-speed gearbox and chain final drive. The chassis remained deliberately compact, with a diamond frame, telescopic front fork and a gas-charged rear damper, helping the bike retain the quick steering and low-mass character that defined the line.
That combination made the 1996-era machine a particularly clear expression of Honda’s original lightweight supersport motorcycle philosophy. The manual specifies a 16-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel combination, dual front discs, a single rear disc and an 18-litre fuel tank. Honda also revised the machine after 1997, and the service specifications separate 1996-1997 values from the later configuration in areas such as dimensions, valve clearance, transmission ratios, carburetion and running gear. This reflects the continuing development of the same basic 919 cc platform rather than a completely new engine family.
For 1998 Honda pushed the concept further. Its official model history records a reduction in dry weight to 180 kg and an increase in maximum output to 130 PS. That evolution kept the CBR900RR competitive as rival manufacturers closed the gap on the formula Honda had introduced earlier in the decade. The next clear generation break arrived in 2000, when displacement increased to 929 cc and PGM-FI electronic fuel injection replaced the carbureted layout; a 954 cc version followed in 2002 before the CBR1000RR era.
This product covers the factory service information shown on the publication itself for 1996 through 1998. The cover explicitly states “1996-1998,” while the specification tables distinguish 1996-1997 from “After ’97,” so the previous 1999 tag is not retained. Related manuals and model-year products are grouped in the Honda CBR900RR service manual catalog.
