About the Honda CBR1100XX

Honda developed the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird as the successor to the CBR1000F and as a flagship large-capacity CBR. Honda’s own history says the project evolved from a proposed CBR1000F update into a completely new machine under the development theme “The Greatest Super Sport.” The goals combined extreme acceleration and high-speed stability with aerodynamic efficiency, smooth control and long-distance usability. The motorcycle was unveiled in 1996 and sold in Europe and North America from the 1997 model year. See Honda’s official Super Blackbird history.

The original Blackbird established the core architecture that defined the model: a liquid-cooled 1,137 cc DOHC inline-four, a rigid diamond-type chassis, full aerodynamic bodywork and Honda’s linked braking system. For the 1999 generation, fuel delivery moved to PGM-FI electronic injection while the fundamental engine dimensions remained 79.0 × 58.0 mm with an 11.0:1 compression ratio. The factory specifications for this period list 42 mm throttle bodies, a hydraulically operated wet multi-plate clutch, a six-speed constant-mesh transmission and chain final drive.

The 1999-2002 version refined the Blackbird into an especially capable high-speed sport-touring motorcycle. The chassis retained 17-inch radial tyres, a conventional telescopic fork and a gas-charged rear damper, while the linked front and rear hydraulic brakes used three-piston calipers. Fuel capacity increased to 24 litres, supporting the bike’s long-distance role. Honda’s emphasis was not limited to maximum speed; the model was engineered to remain stable, predictable and comfortable at sustained high road speeds.

Honda continued developing the electronic and intake systems through this period. When the CBR1100XX was officially launched in Japan in 2001, Honda highlighted its PGM-FI system, direct air-induction system, knock sensor, Dual Combined Brake System and HISS security system. The Japanese specification retained the same 1,137 cc bore-and-stroke dimensions and six-speed transmission, showing how the fuel-injected platform had become the mature form of the original Blackbird concept. See Honda’s 2001 CBR1100XX release.

The Super Blackbird remained in production beyond 2002, but later model years introduced further regional, emissions, instrumentation and equipment changes. This product is limited to the 1999-2002 factory service configuration shown on the uploaded publication and should not be treated as covering the later 2003-2007 machines. Related manuals are grouped in the Honda CBR1100XX service manual catalog.
