About the KTM 250 SX-F and 250 XC-F
KTM developed the 250 SX-F from its factory MX2 racing program rather than from an existing production trail bike. KTM’s own retrospective says a prototype appeared in the 2003 Spanish Grand Prix, the machine won the inaugural MX2 world title with Ben Townley in 2004, and serial-production bikes reached customers in 2006. That racing-first development established the model’s character: a compact, high-revving 250 cc four-stroke built around low weight, strong top-end performance and competition-focused chassis geometry. KTM’s official 250 SX-F history traces that evolution from prototype to production and its subsequent MX2 success.
KTM extended the same concept into cross-country racing with the 250 XC-F. The model was introduced for the 2007 range as an off-road derivative of the SX-F, with contemporary launch coverage describing it as essentially the motocross bike adapted for longer closed-course competition. The changes included a larger fuel tank, 18-inch rear wheel, different ignition and engine tuning, off-road suspension settings and electric starting. That gave KTM a dedicated GNCC/WORCS-style machine rather than forcing riders to convert an SX-F themselves. Racer X’s 2007 XC launch report documents the XC-F’s introduction and its relationship to the SX-F platform.
A major generational step arrived for 2013. KTM completely reworked its SX-F range with a new frame and swingarm, revised electronics, suspension and bodywork, and an all-new 250 engine. The new 250 used a shorter 52.3 mm stroke, 78 mm bore, DOHC finger-follower valve train, plain-bearing connecting rod, die-cast cases, balance shaft and Keihin fuel injection. The 2014 machines were an evolution of that second-generation platform rather than another clean-sheet redesign. Motocross Action’s 2014 test noted that the engine itself was largely unchanged from 2013 while KTM refined suspension, braking, mapping and durability details.
Within that 2014 generation, the SX-F and XC-F were mechanically close but clearly different in purpose. The SX-F used a five-speed gearbox, 7.5-litre tank, 19-inch rear wheel and WP 4860 MXMA CC fork, while the XC-F used a six-speed gearbox, 9-litre tank, 18-inch rear wheel and WP 4860 4CS fork. Both shared the 249.91 cm³ engine, 13.9:1 compression, hydraulic wet clutch, electric start, linkage rear suspension and 260/220 mm disc brakes. This made the pair a closely related **250cc four-stroke competition platform**, with one version optimized for motocross and the other for cross-country racing.
Another major break came for 2016, when KTM replaced this generation with all-new SX-F and XC-F models featuring new frames, lighter engines and revised bodywork; contemporary testing described the 2016 machines as complete redesigns. This listing is limited to the 2014 factory Repair Manual, which specifically covers 250 SX-F EU, 250 SX-F USA and 250 XC-F USA. The source does not state broader year compatibility, so the catalog remains 2014 only. Related factory publications are grouped in the KTM 250 SX-F manual catalog.
