About the KTM 250 SX EU / USA / 250 XC EU / USA / 300 XC EU / USA
KTM had already established the 250-class two-stroke as a core part of its motocross and off-road range well before 2014. The motocross machine developed as the lighter, simpler alternative to the growing four-stroke classes, while KTM also created cross-country derivatives for longer events and mixed terrain. By 2008, Cycle World described the 250 XC as a direct offshoot of the 250 SX that added electric starting and an 18-inch rear wheel for cross-country use. The 300 XC occupied the same competition family with a larger-capacity engine aimed at riders who wanted more torque without moving to a four-stroke.
A major chassis step came for the 250 SX in 2012, when KTM moved the two-stroke motocross platform to rising-rate linkage rear suspension and a new frame. Further chassis revisions followed for 2013, including a stronger swingarm, larger rear axle, revised bodywork and lighter triple clamps. For 2014 KTM refined rather than replaced that generation. Motocross Action documented new Boyesen reed petals, a revised combustion chamber, updated ignition mapping, altered jetting, clutch durability changes and front-brake refinements. The factory manual reflects the motocross focus with a five-speed gearbox, kick-only starting, 7.5-litre tank, 19-inch rear wheel and WP 4860 MXMA CC fork.
The 250 XC adapted the 249 cm³ engine to cross-country racing with a six-speed gearbox, electric plus kick starting, 10-litre tank, 18-inch rear wheel and 13:50 final gearing. The 300 XC used the same cross-country chassis concept but increased displacement to 293 cm³ through a 72 × 72 mm bore and stroke. Both XC models used KTM’s WP 4860 4CS fork for 2014 and shared the WP 5018 BAVP DCC linkage shock. Their larger fuel capacity, electric start and broader gearing made them materially different from the motocross SX even though the engines shared the same reed-induction, exhaust-control architecture and Keihin PWK 36 carburetor family.
These motorcycles therefore represent a mature carbureted two-stroke competition platform just before KTM’s later generations moved toward electronic fuel injection. KTM’s current official model application archive separately preserves 2014 entries for the 250 SX and 250 XC families, while KTM’s modern XC range now uses fuel injection. The company’s official 2024 XC announcement identifies the current 250 XC and 300 XC as EFI-equipped cross-country models, marking a clear technical break from the carbureted 2014 machines.
This listing is specifically for the 2014 factory Repair Manual. The source PDF is headed “REPAIR MANUAL 2014” and contains dedicated 250 SX, 250 XC EU/USA and 300 XC EU/USA technical data, carburetor settings, suspension specifications, service schedules and wiring diagrams. It contains no 300 SX coverage, so that model has been removed from the catalog assignment. Related factory publications are grouped in the KTM 250 SX manual catalog.
