About the KTM 450 SMR
KTM was already building dedicated 450-class supermoto race bikes by 2004, when the 450 SMR appeared as a purpose-built asphalt competition model rather than a converted enduro. Cycle World’s 2005 test described KTM’s SMR line as being at the forefront of the growth of supermoto racing and explained how the 2005 machine refined the previous year’s bike with a stiffer frame, revised triple clamps and swingarm, stronger engine internals and improved power delivery. That early development established the formula the model would keep refining: motocross-derived four-stroke performance combined with supermoto-specific geometry, suspension, brakes and wheels. Cycle World’s 2005 450 SMR test documents that first-generation development.
Through the late 2000s and early 2010s, the 450 SMR remained KTM’s specialized closed-course supermoto offering. KTM’s own parts archive lists successive 450 SMR model years from 2007 through 2014, showing that the motorcycle evolved as a distinct model rather than merely as an accessory package for the SX-F. Its role was clear: combine a light chromoly competition chassis and high-output single-cylinder engine with short-travel road-racing suspension, strong radial braking and slick-compatible supermoto wheels. That made it a genuine competition supermoto race bike designed around hard braking, rapid direction changes and controlled rear-wheel slide on mixed asphalt-and-dirt circuits.
The 2014 model represented the final development of this original production run. Period launch material described it as comprehensively redesigned around KTM’s contemporary 450 SX-F-derived engine and a new chassis. The factory specifications show a 449.3 cm³ liquid-cooled OHC four-valve single with a 95 × 63.4 mm bore and stroke and 12.6:1 compression ratio. Fuel injection, electric starting and a hydraulically operated APTC anti-hopping clutch were paired with a five-speed gearbox. The anti-hopping clutch was particularly important for supermoto because it reduced rear-wheel chatter during aggressive downshifts and corner entry.
The chassis specification also separated the SMR clearly from KTM’s dirt-focused 450s. The 2014 bike uses a chromoly central-tube frame, WP 4860 MXMA CC fork with 280 mm travel and WP 5018 BAVP DCC rear shock with 292 mm travel. A radially mounted four-piston front caliper acts on a 310 mm floating disc, while the rear uses a 220 mm disc. The manual specifies a 1,495 mm wheelbase, 927 mm unloaded seat height, 310 mm ground clearance and approximately 110.2 kg weight without fuel. The 14:48 final ratio, 7.5-litre tank and dedicated supermoto tyre sizes further underline that this was configured for circuit use rather than trail or motocross duty.
After the 2014 model, the 450 SMR disappeared from KTM’s production range for several years. When KTM announced its return for model year 2021, the company explicitly said it had been seven years since the previous 450 SMR and again based the revived motorcycle on the championship-winning 450 SX-F platform. KTM’s official 2021 comeback announcement therefore marks a clear generational break between the 2014 machine and the modern SMR line. This listing is specifically for the 2014 factory Repair Manual and does not establish compatibility with the later 2021-on generation. Related factory publications are grouped in the KTM 450 SMR manual catalog.
