About the Honda Valkyrie

Honda unveiled the original Valkyrie in 1996 as an early-release 1997 model, creating a cruiser unlike the V-twin machines that dominated the heavyweight class. The GL1500C took the 1,520 cm³ horizontally opposed six-cylinder architecture associated with the GL1500 Gold Wing and placed it in a stripped-back cruiser chassis with the engine deliberately exposed as a visual centerpiece. Honda tuned the platform for stronger performance and used six individual carburetors, while the diamond-style chassis, 45 mm inverted fork, shaft final drive and wide radial tires gave the bike handling that contemporary testers found unexpectedly sporting for its size. Honda later described the original machine as the model that effectively created the “muscle cruiser” idea, combining custom styling, substantial power, handling and long-distance ability. Honda's Valkyrie development history provides the manufacturer's retrospective on that concept.

The GL1500CT Valkyrie Tourer broadened the platform almost immediately for riders who wanted to cover distance without giving up the standard model's character. It retained the same flat-six engine, five-speed transmission, shaft drive and basic chassis but added a large windshield and lockable hard saddlebags. Period road tests emphasized that the Tourer was not simply a detuned touring motorcycle: it preserved the acceleration and responsive steering that made the original Valkyrie unusual while making it far more practical for highway travel. Cycle World selected the Tourer as its Best Cruiser of 1997, reflecting how successfully Honda blended cruiser styling with genuine touring function.

For 1999 Honda took the concept further with the GL1500CF Valkyrie Interstate. The Interstate added a fork-mounted fairing, larger 26-litre fuel tank, rear trunk and integrated audio equipment, turning the Valkyrie into a full-dress touring cruiser while retaining the 1,520 cm³ flat-six drivetrain. The factory manual also records Interstate-specific changes to dimensions, steering geometry, bodywork, suspension settings, instruments, lighting and the audio system. Cycle World's 1999 Interstate introduction described it as an extension of the Tourer concept rather than a new mechanical family.

Across the first-generation range, the engine remained the defining feature: a liquid-cooled 1,520 cm³ flat six with belt-driven overhead camshafts, 9.8:1 compression and six 28 mm CV carburetors. A hydraulically operated wet clutch, five-speed gearbox and shaft final drive delivered the power, while twin front discs, a single rear disc and wide 150/80R17 and 180/70R16 tires supported the chassis. The combination made the Valkyrie a distinctive six-cylinder muscle cruiser with a mechanical identity that was closely related to the Gold Wing but a very different riding and styling brief.

The original Valkyrie family ran through the 2003 model year, with variant availability changing over its production life. Honda later revived the Valkyrie name for 2014 on a new 1,832 cm³ GL1800-derived platform, creating a clear generational break from the carbureted GL1500 series. This factory service manual is specifically labeled 1997-2003 and covers GL1500C, GL1500CT and GL1500CF procedures, including year- and variant-specific specifications. Related publications are grouped in the Honda Valkyrie manual catalog.
