About the Honda VRF800FI

Honda introduced the VFR800FI for the 1998 model year as the RC46 successor to the VFR750F RC36. Honda's own historical account describes the RC36 as a highly regarded all-rounder and says the 1998 RC46 refined that formula around the concept of a “high-tech real sports machine.” The new model kept the VFR's established balance of long-distance comfort and sporting ability, but replaced the 750-class engine with a new 781 cm³ V4 and added electronic systems that moved the series decisively into a new generation. Honda's V4 history places the RC46 directly in that lineage.

The 781 cm³ engine was closely related to Honda's RVF/RC45 superbike architecture. Honda lengthened the RC45-derived stroke by 2 mm, retained a 180-degree crank and used gear-driven camshafts, producing a compact liquid-cooled DOHC V4 with four valves per cylinder. The major road-going change was PGM-FI electronic fuel injection, using 36 mm throttle bodies in the factory specification. Honda's April 1998 launch release emphasized the new injection system, improved throttle response and the engine's ability to cover everything from touring to sport riding. Honda's 1998 VFR launch announcement documents the RC46's introduction and technical concept.

The chassis was equally important to the fifth-generation V4 sport-tourer. Honda combined a pivotless aluminum frame arrangement with the Pro-Arm single-sided swingarm, allowing the engine to become a structural part of the chassis while retaining the VFR's characteristic single-sided rear suspension. The service specification lists a 1,440 mm wheelbase, 120 mm of travel at both ends, 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 radial tires and a 21-litre fuel tank. Honda also adopted its Dual Combined Brake System, using three-piston calipers front and rear to link braking forces between both wheels.

Contemporary testing showed how deliberately Honda moved the VFR back toward the sport side of sport-touring without abandoning everyday usability. Cycle World's 1998 test highlighted the RC45-derived gear-cam V4, new fuel injection and strong real-world roll-on performance, while still describing the engine as smooth and flexible. In North America the motorcycle continued the Interceptor identity, connecting the 1998 VFR800FI to a sporting lineage that stretched back to the early VF/VFR models while giving the platform more refinement and emissions control than its predecessors.

A major generational break arrived for 2002, when Honda fully redesigned the VFR around its V4 VTEC valve-control system, revised styling and new emissions hardware. That later VTEC machine should not be treated as the same service configuration as the initial RC46. This download is the original factory service publication issued in November 1997 for the 1998 VFR800FI specification; later Honda manual revisions expanded year coverage. Related publications are grouped in the Honda VFR800FI manual catalog.
