BMW K1100LT / K1100RS Service Repair Manual (1991-1999)

BMW factory repair manual published in Germany in May 1999 for the K1100LT touring and K1100RS sport-touring motorcycles. The 364-page English-language workshop publication includes routine maintenance, tightening torques and fluids, engine repairs, ignition and charging, electronic fuel injection, fuel system, radiator, exhaust, clutch, five-speed gearbox, front fork and steering, shaft final drive, brakes, frame, instruments and lighting. BMW manufactured the K1100LT during 1991–1999 and the K1100RS during 1992–1997; these are model production years, not proof of every edition's year-by-year applicability.

About the BMW K1100LT and K1100RS
BMW expanded its K-series family in the early 1990s after establishing the original K100 as an alternative to its traditional boxer twins. The longitudinal, horizontally laid four-cylinder layout, shaft final drive and carefully developed touring chassis had become distinctive features of these machines. The four-valve engine introduced through the K1 and later K100RS provided the basis for the larger-capacity K1100 range, which served riders seeking greater flexibility and refinement from the platform.
The K1100LT appeared in 1991 as BMW's flagship luxury tourer and became the brand's first motorcycle with displacement exceeding 1,000 cc. Its 1,092 cc, 16-valve, liquid-cooled inline-four offered 74 kW (100 hp), with an emphasis on accessible torque and comfortable long-distance travel. The large touring fairing, luggage-carrying ability, substantial weather protection and upright riding position distinguished the LT from the sportier models. BMW also offered special versions, including the SE and Highline, during a production run that lasted until 1999.
The K1100RS arrived in 1992 to bring the enlarged K engine to BMW's four-cylinder sport-touring motorcycle lineup. It developed from the K100RS four-valve model and retained a recognizably related upper fairing while receiving a redesigned lower fairing. With 100 hp at 7,500 rpm, the RS combined open-road performance with the stability, luggage practicality and long-distance character expected of the RS family. Its production run lasted through 1997.
Both models used electronic fuel injection, a five-speed gearbox, a dry single-plate clutch and shaft final drive. Their Paralever rear suspension helped limit the adverse suspension reactions traditionally associated with shaft-driven motorcycles. The K1100 generation also belonged to BMW's period of increasing use of electronic engine management and anti-lock braking technology. Although the LT and RS shared the same fundamental engine family, their bodywork, ergonomics and intended uses differed substantially: touring comfort was central to the LT, while the RS was aimed at riders who valued a more sporting riding position and fairing.
By the end of the decade, BMW was moving to the next generation of larger K-series machines. The K1200RS followed the K1100RS as the sport-tourer, while the K1200LT took the luxury-touring role forward. BMW's own histories describe the K1100LT's 1991–1999 production and the K1100RS's 1992–1997 run; see the BMW Group Classic K1100LT history and BMW Motorrad's RS retrospective. Related technical publications are available in the BMW service manual catalog. The present workshop manual is the May 1999 edition, which should not be confused with a claim that both motorcycles were manufactured in 1999.
