BMW K1200LT Service Manual (1999)

BMW unveiled the K1200LT at INTERMOT in Munich in September 1998 and began retail deliveries in spring 1999. BMW's original launch release positioned it at the top of the touring range, combining long-distance comfort with equipment such as heated seating, trip-computer functions and integrated audio. BMW later described the model as the successor to the K 1100 LT and as a new interpretation of touring with a deliberate emphasis on luxury, comfort and extensive standard equipment.

The launch-generation machine used the longitudinal K-series four-cylinder platform in 1,171 cm³ form. Its liquid-cooled DOHC engine has a 70.5 × 75 mm bore and stroke, 10.8:1 compression, 72 kW output and 115 N·m of maximum torque, with Bosch Motronic MA 2.4 electronic fuel injection. Drive passes through a hydraulically operated single dry-plate clutch to a five-speed gearbox with an integral electrically assisted reverser. That reverse system was particularly useful on a fully equipped machine weighing about 378.5 kg ready for the road and became one of the defining practical features of BMW's luxury touring flagship.

The chassis combined a cast-aluminium bridge frame with BMW Telelever front suspension and Paralever rear suspension with shaft final drive. The early rear bevel ratio is 2.75:1, and the two-section driveshaft incorporates a torsional vibration damper and universal joints inside the Paralever swingarm. Factory dimensions include a 1,632 mm wheelbase in normal-load condition, 770/800 mm seat-height settings, 102 mm front wheel travel and 130 mm rear wheel travel. Twin 305 mm front discs and a 285 mm rear disc provided the braking hardware, while integrated side cases, a 50-litre top case, electrically adjustable windscreen, radio equipment and available heated seating reinforced the touring brief.

The first major technical break came for model year 2001. BMW's Integral ABS launch material states that the K 1200 LT received the fully integrated version as standard from February 2001, combining electrohydraulic brake assistance with linked front and rear braking. BMW's 2001 programme also documents a revised rear-axle ratio of 2.62 instead of 2.75 and revised fifth-gear gearing. A second major evolution arrived for model year 2004, when BMW increased output to 85 kW, revised the engine and transmission, updated the chassis and styling, and introduced the electrohydraulic centre stand.
