About the Honda CRF250R

Honda developed its quarter-litre four-stroke motocross programme as the CRF range began reshaping competition during the early 2000s. The successful CRF450R supplied important lessons in lightweight aluminium chassis design and the compact Unicam cylinder head, but the smaller machine was conceived for a different racing class. A prototype appeared at the final round of the 2002 All Japan Motocross Championship, where Ernest Fonseca won its first race. Following further development with HRC during 2003, Honda introduced the production CRF250R in 2003 as a 2004 model. The manufacturer's stated design goal, “FAST & EASY,” sought to combine race-winning performance with handling that less experienced riders could manage. Honda's own development history documents this origin and the machine's early racing programme.

The debut model employed a new 249.4 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a 78 mm bore and 52.2 mm stroke. Its Unicam arrangement drove the inlet valves directly while operating the exhaust valves through rocker arms, enabling a compact, lightweight four-valve head. Magnesium engine covers and a short-skirt piston further reduced mass, while the aluminium twin-tube frame took inspiration from the larger CRF450R without simply duplicating it. The new motorcycle competed in the class historically shared with 125 cc two-strokes, making responsive cornering and manageable power delivery especially important. Honda tested the balance between high-revving power and controllability in real motocross races before and after its production introduction.

Honda refined the model continuously rather than treating the original design as complete. For 2005, revised cylinder-head porting, camshaft timing, ignition mapping, clutch parts and shifting components improved low-speed response and reliability. The 2006 revision made the most conspicuous early visual change by adopting two exhaust silencers instead of one. Moving exhaust mass closer to the motorcycle's centreline helped handling while revised cylinder-head and exhaust components boosted performance. A larger 40 mm carburetor replaced the earlier 37 mm unit, with complementary engine and suspension changes. The 2006 Honda development briefing explains why the dual-muffler design was adopted and how the engine and chassis revisions were connected.

Further adjustments for 2007 addressed camshaft and intake/exhaust flow, ignition response, fork characteristics and front-brake control, reflecting lessons learned from professional racing. The 2008 machine introduced Honda's Progressive Steering Damper, designed to retain light steering at low speeds while reducing unwanted handlebar movement over rough terrain. Its changing mechanical settings and continued carburetor development made this a distinctive part of the carbureted four-stroke motocross generation. For 2009 the same broad single-cylinder Unicam concept continued with updated tuning and detail refinements. Honda's later CRF250R technical history identifies the 2006 dual exhaust and the 2008 steering-damper introduction as milestones in the model's development.

The 2004–2009 years therefore form an identifiable early period in the motorcycle's history, marked by aluminium twin-tube frames, kick-starting, a cable-operated wet clutch, five-speed transmission and Keihin carburetion. Race success strengthened the platform's reputation, including an All Japan IA2 championship in 2005. A much more substantial break came with the 2010 model, when Honda introduced batteryless PGM-FI electronic fuel injection, a redesigned engine and frame, and a return to a single muffler. The 2010 fuel-injected machine should not be confused with the earlier carbureted motorcycles, even though all share the CRF250R name. Honda's July 2009 announcement confirms this change. Other CRF publications can be found in the Honda service manual catalog.
