KTM had established the 65 SX as a dedicated youth motocross model by the beginning of the 2000s. KTM documentation from 2000 still grouped the 60 SX and 65 SX together, while the 2001 owner’s handbook treated the 65 SX as its own model and described it as an off-road competition motorcycle for younger riders. That early machine already used a liquid-cooled two-stroke engine, six-speed transmission and disc brakes, placing it above entry-level minibikes and below the larger 85 cc class. The basic role has remained consistent ever since: a serious race bike for riders progressing from the 50 SX before moving to the 85 SX.

Across the following decade, KTM steadily refined that formula rather than turning the 65 SX into a scaled-down trail bike. The engine grew to the familiar 64.85 cm³ displacement and retained the 45 mm bore, while chassis development moved toward higher-specification suspension and braking hardware. By the 2013 model range, KTM was promoting the 65 SX around its exhaust-pressure-operated power valve and fully adjustable suspension, reinforcing its position as a genuine competition machine. The 2014 bike continued that mature generation with a chrome-molybdenum central-tube frame, WP suspension, hydraulic clutch and full-size-style bodywork scaled to younger riders.

The 2014 specification combines a 64.85 cm³ liquid-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke with a 45 × 40.8 mm bore and stroke, reed intake and KTM’s PCEV pneumatic exhaust-control system. A Mikuni TM 24 carburetor supplies the engine, while a hydraulically operated multi-disc wet clutch feeds a six-speed claw-shifted gearbox. The chassis uses a WP USD 35 fork with 215 mm of travel and a WP 3614 BAVP rear shock providing 270 mm of travel. Disc brakes are fitted at both ends, with a 198 mm front rotor and 160 mm rear rotor. At approximately 55.5 kg without fuel, with a 750 mm seat height and 1,137 mm wheelbase, the motorcycle remained deliberately compact for junior racers while retaining the adjustability and service requirements of a full competition machine.

This combination made the 65 SX an important youth motocross race bike in KTM’s progression system. Its rider-weight guidance, hydraulic controls and adjustable suspension were designed around developing racers rather than casual recreational use. KTM’s own model application database still lists a distinct “65 SX EU 2014” entry, confirming the model-year identity of this generation. A much larger generational break arrived for 2024, when KTM completely redeveloped its mini-cross range. In its official 2024 mini-cross announcement, KTM said the new 65 SX had been developed with international test riders over two years and brought the junior range closer to the proportions and development philosophy of the full-size SX machines.
