Moto Guzzi California EV / Special / Special Sport / Jackal / Stone Service Manual (1997-2002)

Moto Guzzi developed the California from the V7 Police programme created for American law-enforcement customers at the end of the 1960s. The production California that followed became one of the marque’s longest-running touring families, combining a transverse V-twin, shaft drive, generous riding position and unusually capable road manners for a large cruiser. By 1994 the family had reached 1064 cc with the California 1100, and in 1997 the California EV V1100 marked the next major step. Piaggio Group’s official California history identifies the EV as the 1997 evolution that added revised engine components, electronic fuel injection, tubeless wire-spoke wheels and a new 45 mm fork.

The EV retained the traditional 1064 cc air-cooled 90-degree big-block V-twin, with a 92 × 80 mm bore and stroke and 9.5:1 compression, but paired it with Magneti Marelli IAW 15M sequential electronic injection. Factory specification was 54 kW (73.5 CV) at 6,400 rpm and 94 Nm at 5,000 rpm. A hydraulically controlled dry twin-disc clutch, five-speed gearbox and 8/33 shaft final drive preserved the established Moto Guzzi drivetrain. On the EV, the chassis combined 45 mm Marzocchi suspension with Moto Guzzi’s linked integral braking system, using twin 320 mm front discs and a 282 mm rear disc.

The range diversified rapidly. The California Special appeared in 1999 as a more overtly cruiser-styled interpretation, with separate rider and passenger seating, revised floorboards, lighting and the distinctive rear mudguard treatment described in Moto Guzzi’s own retrospective. The California Jackal, catalogued for 1999-2001, simplified the formula with a more stripped appearance and a conventional independent braking layout using a single 320 mm front disc. These variants allowed the same 1100 platform to serve riders looking for either traditional touring equipment or a leaner custom presentation.

For 2001 the family expanded again with the California Special Sport and California Stone. The Special Sport kept the linked-brake architecture of the EV/Special line but used its own suspension and wheel specification, while the Stone followed the simpler Jackal approach with conventional braking and a more basic custom treatment. Factory parts-catalogue records separate the Special Sport and Stone as 2001-2002 generations, while the EV itself continued into 2002. Together these machines formed a broad electronic-injected Italian shaft-drive touring and custom family built around the same 1064 cc big-block engine but differentiated through chassis equipment, wheels, brakes and styling.

The next significant technical break came with the later California EV Touring development, which Moto Guzzi’s official history associates with 2003 and features such as hydraulic tappets, a three-way catalytic converter with lambda sensor and piston-cooling oil jets. This product is therefore limited to the EV, Special, Special Sport, Jackal and Stone configurations documented by the 04/02 workshop publication, rather than later California derivatives.
