About the Moto Guzzi Griso 1100
Moto Guzzi developed the Griso during a period of renewal in the early 2000s. The unusual roadster grew from the Tecnocustom concept displayed in 2002 and from a design by Rodolfo Frascoli, combining the manufacturer's familiar transverse V-twin with an angular, almost sculptural body and a muscular stance. Its name alluded to a character in Alessandro Manzoni's Italian novel The Betrothed. Following the Piaggio Group's acquisition of Moto Guzzi in December 2004, the company prepared the Griso for series production alongside the more conventional Breva. Piaggio's official history records the Griso launch in September 2005 as a central part of this revival.
The production Griso 1100 arrived with a 1,064 cc air-cooled, two-valve-per-cylinder transverse 90-degree twin derived from the manufacturer's long-running large-capacity engine family. It retained pushrod and rocker valve actuation, but paired traditional mechanical character with electronic fuel injection and twin-spark ignition. The six-speed gearbox and hydraulically operated twin-plate dry clutch transmitted power to the rear wheel through the Compact Reactive Cardan, or CARC, shaft-drive assembly. Unlike an older rigidly reacting shaft-drive layout, the CARC system incorporated a reaction linkage intended to reduce torque effects on the suspension. It was a technically distinctive solution for a bike whose visual identity was equally unconventional.
The Griso was conceived as an Italian muscular naked roadster rather than a conventional cruiser or enclosed sport-tourer. Its exposed frame, long wheelbase and broad tank gave it a low, purposeful appearance, while the upright handlebar and mid-mounted foot controls made it more usable on winding roads than its dimensions might suggest. A massive upswept exhaust, compact rear section, 17-inch alloy wheels and a single-sided swingarm were among its visual signatures. A 43 mm adjustable upside-down front fork, a linkage-operated rear shock and twin 320 mm front brake discs brought contemporary chassis components to the traditional big-block engine. The combination helped establish the Griso as an alternative to both mainstream naked bikes and retro-styled classics.
The range broadened in April 2006 with the Griso 850, which used an 877 cc shorter-stroke V-twin while retaining closely related chassis styling and the six-speed shaft-drive layout. The 1100 remained the more substantial and torque-focused version, with its larger engine, twin-spark arrangement and visible oil radiator helping distinguish it from the smaller variant. In 2007 Moto Guzzi also introduced the substantially different Griso 8V, a 1,151 cc model with four-valve cylinder heads and a revised engine architecture. Although its design and chassis retained obvious family similarities, the 8V was not merely a higher-capacity version of the original two-valve 1100 and had its own service requirements. A published Griso model chronology distinguishes the 850, original 1100 and 8V stages.
The original two-valve 1100 reached the end of its regular production run around 2008 as the 1200 8V became the principal Griso offering, although later residual or limited-market availability has been reported. The larger four-valve line continued to evolve independently and eventually became more closely associated with the Griso name. In retrospect, the 1100 was important for proving that the classic Mandello del Lario engine could anchor a striking modern performance-oriented road motorcycle without sacrificing the traditional transverse twin and Cardan final drive. The 2005–2008 date range describes its principal production years; individual vehicle compatibility must still be checked against chassis and engine specifications.
