About the Honda SuperHawk and VTR1000F
Honda introduced the VTR1000F in 1997 as a large-capacity V-twin road-sport motorcycle aimed at combining strong real-world torque with light, responsive handling. In North America it was sold as the SuperHawk, while many other markets knew it as the FireStorm. Honda’s March 1997 launch release says exports to Europe and North America had already begun in January that year, with the motorcycle positioned as a sporty, agile alternative to large inline-four machines. See Honda’s original FireStorm launch announcement.
The heart of the platform was a newly designed 995.7 cc liquid-cooled 90-degree DOHC V-twin with four valves per cylinder. Factory specifications give a 98.0 × 66.0 mm bore and stroke, 9.4:1 compression ratio and two large 48 mm semi-downdraft constant-velocity carburetors. The engine drove through a hydraulically operated wet multi-plate clutch and six-speed constant-mesh transmission. Honda deliberately tuned the V-twin for strong, usable output from low revs through the upper range, giving the bike the broad delivery that became central to its identity as a large-capacity V-twin sport motorcycle.
The chassis was equally distinctive. Honda used a lightweight aluminum diamond frame with the swingarm pivot mounted through the rear of the engine crankcase, a layout Honda described as a swingarm-pivotless frame. This reduced structural weight while using the engine as a major load-bearing element. A 41 mm telescopic fork, rear swingarm suspension, dual front discs, 17-inch radial tyres and compact 1,430 mm wheelbase supported the bike’s emphasis on agile road handling. The half fairing and aerodynamic bodywork balanced wind protection with a slimmer, less enclosed appearance than a full superbike fairing.
Honda refined the platform rather than replacing it immediately. For 2001, the Japanese-market FireStorm received Honda Ignition Security System (HISS), a larger 18-litre fuel tank in place of the earlier 16-litre tank, and a revised fully adjustable rear suspension with remote reservoir. These changes improved security, range and chassis adjustability without altering the basic 995 cc carbureted V-twin architecture. Honda’s 2001 FireStorm update announcement documents those changes, while the 2002 model received further color and detail revisions.
This product is specifically for the 1998-2003 factory service-manual edition. The uploaded 376-page scan is labeled “1998-2003 VTR1000F Super Hawk” and covers the carbureted SC36 platform through that period; it should not be extended to later model years simply because the VTR1000F remained in production in some markets. Related publications are grouped in the Honda VTR1000F service manual catalog and the Honda SuperHawk catalog.
