The 2005 Kawasaki ZX6R represented a further development of Kawasaki's 636 cc supersport platform. Drive passes through a wet multi-disc clutch, six-speed constant-mesh transmission and chain final drive.

The chassis reflects the model's track-oriented design. Kawasaki specifies a tubular diamond frame, 25-degree rake, 106 mm trail and a 1,390 mm wheelbase. Suspension consists of an upside-down telescopic fork with 120 mm travel and a Uni-Trak rear system with 135 mm travel. Seventeen-inch radial tires are paired with dual front discs and a single rear disc. The factory lists a 164 kg dry mass, 820 mm seat height and 17 L fuel capacity.
