Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom Service Manual (2002)

Suzuki introduced the V-Strom 1000 in 2002 as the first model in what the company described as a new sport-adventure-touring category. Suzuki's official V-Strom 1000 digital archive describes the original machine as combining adventure-tourer styling with sport-bike elements, including a high-performance V-twin engine and aluminum frame. The model was aimed at riders who wanted long-distance comfort and versatility without giving up strong road performance.

The DL1000 K2 uses a 996 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC 90-degree V-twin with a 98.0 × 66.0 mm bore and stroke and an 11.3:1 compression ratio. Factory specifications list electronic fuel injection, a wet multi-plate clutch and a six-speed constant-mesh transmission. Final drive is by chain with a 41/17 reduction ratio. Suzuki's archive lists 72 kW (98 PS) and 101 N·m for the 2002 V-Strom 1000, giving the first-generation platform strong road performance while retaining broad touring usability.

The chassis uses an aluminum frame, 1,535 mm wheelbase and 207 kg dry mass in the factory service specification. A 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel, long-travel suspension and upright ergonomics distinguish the motorcycle from Suzuki's pure road-sport models. Together with the 996 cm³ V-twin, the package defines the bike as a 996cc V-twin adventure tourer designed for highway travel, back-road riding and mixed everyday use.

Electronic fuel injection was central to the DL1000 from launch. The factory manual covers ECM self-diagnosis, sensor testing, fuel-pump control, throttle-body servicing, charging and starting systems, cooling, lubrication and market-specific emissions equipment. Suzuki later carried the V-Strom 1000 name into a substantially redesigned second generation for 2014, but the 2002 K2 documented here belongs to the original first-generation platform.
