About the Kawasaki Z1000
Kawasaki revived the litre-class Z name for the modern era with the original Z1000 introduced for the 2003 model year. Kawasaki's own retrospective on the 2003 launch described that first modern Z1000 as a new sport model distinguished by unique styling and enhanced handling. That formula—upright naked-bike ergonomics combined with aggressive engine and chassis tuning—became the foundation for the later large-capacity Z models.
For 2010 the company carried out a full model change of the Z1000. Kawasaki's 2010 annual report specifically identifies the Z1000 as a large-displacement sport model that received a complete redesign and notes the model's strong popularity in Europe. The 2010–2013 ZR1000D/E platform moved to a 1,043 cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with a 77.0 × 56.0 mm bore and stroke, 11.8:1 compression, Keihin TTK38 fuel injection and strong midrange-focused output. In full-power specification the factory manual lists 101.5 kW (138 PS) and 110 N·m, giving this generation the character of a 1,043 cc naked sport motorcycle rather than a detuned supersport derivative.
The chassis matched that street-focused performance brief. The platform uses a compact diamond-type frame, 24.5-degree steering geometry, 17-inch radial tyres, an inverted front fork and Uni-Trak rear suspension, with dual front discs and a single rear disc. Kawasaki offered both standard-brake and ABS-equipped versions, represented in this manual by the ZR1000D and ZR1000E families. A six-speed constant-mesh transmission, wet multi-disc clutch and chain final drive complete a package aimed at direct road response rather than touring equipment or full fairing protection.
This design remained the core Z1000 platform through 2013. For 2014 Kawasaki introduced the next major version at the Milan Show, describing it as a 'Supernaked' shaped around the company's new sugomi design language. The 2014-model announcement retained the 1,043 cc inline-four but added more aggressive styling, stronger acceleration response and the SFF-BP front suspension system, making a clear generational break from the 2010–2013 motorcycle.
This download is specifically factory service manual 99924-1436-05, 5th Edition dated May 11, 2012. Its Model Application table covers 2010 ZR1000DA/EA, 2011 DB/EB, 2012 DC/EC and 2013 DD/ED, and Kawasaki's current service-manual listing independently identifies the same publication as compatible with 2010–2013 Z1000 models. Related manuals can be browsed in the Z1000 service manual category.
