About the Ducati 1098
Ducati introduced the 1098 in November 2006 for the 2007 model year as the replacement for the 999-generation Superbike. The new machine represented both a technical redesign and a deliberate return to styling themes associated with the earlier 916/996/998 family. Ducati’s own 1098 heritage page highlights the compact front end, horizontal twin headlights, high tail, twin under-seat silencers and single-sided swingarm that reconnected the flagship Superbike with that lineage. The steel-trellis chassis remained recognizably Ducati, but the complete package was lighter, more compact and more performance-focused than the outgoing 999.
At the center of the new generation was the 1,099 cm³ Testastretta Evoluzione engine. The liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin used a 104 mm bore and 64.7 mm stroke, desmodromic four-valve cylinder heads and 60 mm injection hardware. Ducati quoted up to 160 CV in factory acceleration-bench testing, a major step from the preceding road-going Superbike twins. The engine was paired with a six-speed gearbox, hydraulic dry multi-plate clutch and chain final drive. Ducati later described the Testastretta Evoluzione as incorporating technical solutions derived from its MotoGP program, helping establish the 1098 as a new Italian V-twin superbike benchmark.
The standard 1098 and the higher-spec 1098S shared the same basic engine and frame, but the S version concentrated its upgrades in the chassis and data-acquisition equipment. The standard motorcycle used fully adjustable 43 mm Showa suspension front and rear, while the 1098S received 43 mm Öhlins FG315 forks and an Öhlins rear shock. The S also used lighter wheels and included Ducati Data Analyzer capability as standard. A contemporary Cycle World 1098S test noted that the two versions shared the same engine while the S model’s principal differences were its Öhlins suspension, lighter wheels and carbon-fiber details.
The 1098 also introduced hardware that became important to Ducati’s later superbikes, including Brembo radial monobloc front calipers and integrated data acquisition. Its combination of a 1,430 mm wheelbase, single-sided swingarm, trellis frame and 330 mm twin front discs gave the motorcycle a clear road-and-track focus. The family expanded with the 1098R, while Ducati’s next major road-model evolution was the 1,198 cm³ 1198 introduced for 2009. Ducati’s own Superbike history places the 1098 and 1198 together as the bridge between the 999 era and the later Panigale generation.
This listing corresponds specifically to the 2007 factory 1098/1098S service publication, edition 00. The manual identifies model year 2007 in its frame-number section and contains separate suspension specifications and procedures for the standard and S versions. It does not establish 2008 or 2009 applicability. Related documentation is available in the Ducati 1098 service manual catalog.
