About the Moto Guzzi Griso 8V 1200
Moto Guzzi introduced the original Griso 1100 in September 2005 as one of the most distinctive motorcycles in its post-Aprilia/Piaggio revival. The bike combined a long, low silhouette, exposed mechanical architecture and a transverse big-block V-twin with styling that was deliberately more muscular and architectural than the conventional naked motorcycles of the period. Moto Guzzi’s official historical overview records the Griso 1100’s 2005 launch and the addition of an 850 cc version in 2006, establishing the platform before the major 1200 upgrade.
The decisive evolution arrived in 2007 with the Griso 1200 8V. Piaggio presented it as an important new premium sporting naked and, more significantly, as the first Moto Guzzi production model to use the company’s new four-valve-per-cylinder big-block engine. Capacity rose to 1151 cc, with a 95 × 81.2 mm bore and stroke, 11:1 compression and factory output of more than 80.8 kW, or 110 CV, at 7,500 rpm. The new engine retained the traditional transverse 90-degree V-twin layout and shaft final drive, but gave the Griso substantially stronger performance and became the basis for later four-valve Moto Guzzi models. Piaggio’s September 2007 presentation announcement documents the launch period.
The chassis preserved the character that made the Griso unusual. A high-strength steel double-cradle frame, 43 mm fully adjustable upside-down fork, single-sided rear suspension and long 1,554 mm wheelbase produced a low, planted stance rather than a short-wheelbase supersport feel. Twin 320 mm radial-caliper front brakes, 17-inch cast wheels and a 180-section rear tyre gave the motorcycle serious road hardware, while the 800 mm seat and broad handlebar kept it usable outside purely sporting riding. The result was a large-capacity Italian shaft-drive sporting roadster with a visual and mechanical identity very different from conventional inline-four naked bikes.
The 8V platform continued to evolve rather than being immediately replaced. During 2008 Moto Guzzi expanded the Griso 8V range with new colour treatments, and in 2009 the Griso SE added a more overtly sporting visual treatment to the same basic architecture. The model remained one of Moto Guzzi’s signature roadsters into the following decade, while the four-valve engine family spread to machines such as the Stelvio and later Norge GT 8V. This made the Griso important not only as a model in its own right, but also as the first production showcase for a new generation of Moto Guzzi big-block engines.
This product covers the original 2007-2011 Griso 1200 8V generation identified by factory Service Station Manual 854378 and the corresponding GU088 parts catalogue. Later Griso 8V production incorporated additional technical revisions and should be matched to later service information rather than automatically treated as identical to this early workshop publication. Related manuals are grouped in the Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 8V service manual catalog.
