About the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX
Moto Guzzi unveiled the Stelvio 1200 at EICMA 2007 and presented the production motorcycle to the international press in Siena in March 2008. Named after the Alpine Stelvio Pass, the new machine moved Moto Guzzi into the large-capacity adventure-touring class while retaining the transverse 90-degree V-twin and shaft final drive that distinguished the Mandello marque. The original Stelvio was designed primarily as a long-distance road and all-terrain tourer, combining upright ergonomics, long-travel suspension and a 19-inch front wheel with the character of Moto Guzzi's big-block engine. Piaggio Group's official Moto Guzzi history records the 2007 preview and 2008 press launch.
The Stelvio 1200 NTX arrived in 2009 as the more expedition-oriented development of that platform. Piaggio's historical account identifies the NTX as the model that introduced ABS to Moto Guzzi's maxi-enduro line and notes that it also brought the first major update to the Quattrovalvole engine, including revised camshafts. The NTX strengthened the Stelvio's touring role with additional protection and travel equipment while preserving the 1151 cc air/oil-cooled V-twin, six-speed gearbox and cardan shaft final drive.
Mechanically, this first-generation NTX retained the Stelvio's substantial steel chassis and long-travel suspension. The factory specification used a 50 mm adjustable upside-down fork with 170 mm of travel, a progressive-link monoshock rear suspension with 155 mm of travel, twin 320 mm radial-caliper front brakes and 19-inch front / 17-inch rear spoked wheels. A hydraulic dry clutch, Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection and 18-litre fuel tank completed a package aimed at riders who wanted a large-capacity Italian shaft-drive adventure tourer with more road-touring emphasis than a lightweight enduro.
During 2009 and 2010 the NTX established itself as the travel-focused member of the Stelvio family. The combination of ABS, protective equipment and the updated four-valve engine differentiated it from the earliest Stelvio while keeping the same basic platform. A clear generational break followed at EICMA 2010, when Moto Guzzi presented the new Stelvio 1200 8V and Stelvio 1200 NTX models that reached the road in spring 2011. The later generation brought revised bodywork, further engine development and a much larger 32-litre fuel tank, creating a meaningful technical separation from the 2009-2010 NTX.
This product covers the first-generation 2009-2010 Stelvio 1200 NTX documented by factory Service Station Manual 981127. The publication predates the separate 2011 MY11 manual for the redesigned NTX, so later motorcycles should be matched to their corresponding service information. Related workshop publications are grouped in the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX service manual catalog.
