About the Moto Guzzi California EV V1100
Moto Guzzi created the California line from the American-market V7 Police programme of the late 1960s. The police specification developed for Los Angeles helped establish the large saddle, floorboards, broad handlebar and touring equipment that became the production California identity in the early 1970s. Over the following decades the concept progressed through 750, 850 and 1000 cc generations before reaching the 1100 cc family. Piaggio Group’s official history of the Moto Guzzi California traces that lineage from the V7 Police through the later California generations.
The California EV V1100 arrived in 1997 as a major evolution of the 1100 platform. Moto Guzzi used the EV designation to emphasize mechanical development, including revised connecting rods and electronic fuel injection, while the motorcycle was visually distinguished by rounder valve covers, tubeless wire-spoke wheels and a new 45 mm fork. The 1064 cc transverse 90-degree V-twin retained the traditional pushrod, two-valve layout and shaft final drive, but electronic injection moved the California decisively beyond the carburetted versions that preceded it. The five-speed gearbox, large 19-litre tank, long 1,560 mm wheelbase and linked integral braking system reinforced its role as a long-distance road motorcycle rather than a conventional lightweight cruiser.
The EV also became the foundation for a broad family of California derivatives. In 1999 the EV Special introduced a more overt cruiser treatment with separate rider and passenger seats, revised floorboards, lighting and the characteristic rear mudguard treatment. Simpler variants such as the Stone and Jackal followed, while the EV 80 commemorated Moto Guzzi’s 80th anniversary with more luxurious touring trim. Through these versions the underlying 1100 platform remained recognizable as an electronic-injected Italian shaft-drive grand tourer, combining the established transverse V-twin architecture with increasingly modern fuel, chassis and emissions systems.
The most important late development came in 2003 with the California EV Touring. Moto Guzzi’s official history describes it as the final major act of the EV evolution, adding hydraulic tappets, a three-way catalytic converter with lambda sensor and oil-jet piston cooling. Workshop documentation from this period also records changes in clutch configuration and engine breather routing. These updates make MY2003 a meaningful technical boundary within the EV family rather than simply another paint-and-trim year. Moto Guzzi states that more than 20,000 California EV motorcycles were produced across the EV era, underlining the model’s importance to the marque’s touring range.
The California EV family itself continued beyond the earliest workshop editions, but this product is limited to the 1997-2003 configurations actually documented by the supplied service material: the 1997-2000 bikes, the 2001 changes and the MY2003 technical updates. Later California variants should not automatically be treated as identical. Related workshop documentation is grouped in the Moto Guzzi California EV V1100 service manual catalog.
