About the Moto Guzzi Engine V9 IE MIU G3
Moto Guzzi introduced the V9 family for 2016 as a new middleweight custom line positioned between the long-running Nevada and the company’s larger California models. The range opened with two motorcycles sharing the same platform but deliberately different personalities: the more traditional V9 Roamer and the darker, wide-tyred V9 Bobber. Moto Guzzi described the Roamer as the heir to the Nevada, while the Bobber used 16-inch wheels and a more stripped-back visual treatment. The manufacturer’s 2016 V9 launch feature presents the pair as a new product and displacement segment for the Mandello del Lario range.
The centrepiece of the first V9 generation was its new 853 cc small-block transverse V-twin. Although it retained Moto Guzzi’s traditional 90-degree architecture, the engine was substantially reworked for Euro 4 and for stronger low-speed response. The 84 × 77 mm bore and stroke produced 853 cc, compression was 10.5:1, and the first-generation specification delivered 55 hp at 6,250 rpm and 62 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Piaggio’s engineering material describes a new reinforced aluminium crankcase, revised crankshaft, lower-loss lubrication system, piston-cooling oil jets, revised combustion-chamber and valve geometry, new electronic engine management and a new six-speed gearbox. See Piaggio Group’s technical description of the new V9 850 engine.
The chassis and styling were built around accessibility rather than outright performance. Both V9 versions used a steel twin-cradle frame, shaft final drive, ABS and Moto Guzzi traction control, but their wheel packages separated their characters. The Roamer used a 19-inch front wheel for a more traditional custom stance, while the Bobber used broad 16-inch tyres at both ends for a lower and more muscular appearance. With a low seat, relatively compact dimensions and a wet weight around 200 kg, the V9 was conceived as a middleweight Italian shaft-drive custom motorcycle that retained clear Moto Guzzi mechanical identity while being easier to manage than the larger California family.
The V9 platform evolved quickly. For model year 2017 Moto Guzzi revised the Roamer and Bobber around comfort, changing riding positions, seats and touring details while retaining the original 853 cc Euro 4 engine architecture. A much larger technical change arrived later when Moto Guzzi updated the V9 with the 65 hp, 73 Nm 850 cc engine derived from the V85 TT, together with a strengthened frame and additional chassis and electronics changes. That later generation is mechanically distinct enough that the original 2016 engine workshop publication should not automatically be treated as universal V9 service information.
This product covers the original Engine V9 IE MIU G3 factory workshop publication 2Q000202 from 2016, the engine and six-speed gearbox used at the launch of the V9 Roamer and V9 Bobber. It is an engine-specific manual rather than a complete vehicle service manual, so chassis, ABS and bodywork procedures belong in the corresponding motorcycle workshop documentation. Related material is grouped in the Moto Guzzi V9 IE MIU G3 engine manual catalog.
