About the Aprilia Pegaso 650
Aprilia developed the Pegaso as a road-biased evolution of its off-road experience. The company’s official history identifies the Pegaso 600 in 1990 as a motorcycle with strongly off-road-derived chassis architecture intended primarily for road use, followed by the Pegaso 650 in 1992. That combination of long-travel suspension, upright ergonomics and single-cylinder simplicity established the basic formula that Aprilia continued to refine through the 1990s.
The next major step was the Pegaso 650 Cube, which Aprilia’s historical chronology places in 1997. The Cube generation developed the platform into a more mature road and touring motorcycle while retaining the 19-inch front wheel, long suspension travel and dual-purpose stance. Aprilia’s own historical archive then records the Pegaso 650 I.E. in 2001, marking the move to electronic fuel injection. This was a significant technical change from the carbureted versions that preceded it and gave the early-2000s Pegaso a distinct place within the model lineage.
The fuel-injected machine used Aprilia’s 655 EFI engine, a liquid-cooled 652 cm³ single with double overhead camshafts and five valves. Factory specifications list a 100 × 83 mm bore and stroke, 9.0:1 compression, 34 kW at 6,750 rpm and 56 Nm at 5,550 rpm. A SAGEM management system controlled electronic multipoint indirect injection and inductive ignition. The drivetrain combined a wet multi-plate hydraulic clutch, five-speed gearbox and 16/46 chain final drive, creating a fuel-injected single-cylinder dual-purpose motorcycle focused on usable low- and mid-range road performance rather than high engine speeds.
The chassis remained consistent with the Pegaso’s mixed road and trail origins. A composite steel and light-alloy structure used a removable cradle and saddle pillar, while a 45 mm telescopic fork provided 170 mm of travel and the rear monoshock gave 165 mm of wheel travel. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, 200 mm ground clearance, 21-litre fuel capacity and upright proportions supported touring and poor-road use, while the 300 mm front disc and 240 mm rear disc reflected its predominantly road-going role. Aprilia’s chronology places this injected generation after the 1997 Cube and before the next major redesign.
That redesign arrived in the mid-2000s. Piaggio Group’s 2005 financial statement records production of the new Pegaso 650 in road and Enduro versions, corresponding to the later Strada and Trail family and providing a clear generation break from the I.E.-era machine. This listing is based specifically on workshop manual 8140638, first edition February 2002, Release 00/2002-02. Because the publication does not explicitly state a wider year range, catalog applicability remains conservatively verified for 2002. Related documentation is grouped in the Aprilia Pegaso 650 manual category.
