About the Aprilia RSV 1000 R and RSV 1000 R Factory
Aprilia entered the large-capacity sportbike class in 1998 with the RSV Mille, then launched a substantially redesigned RSV 1000 in 2003 for the 2004 model generation. Aprilia's official brand history identifies 2003 as the launch year of the new RSV 1000, while Piaggio's later platform retrospective refers specifically to the technical and styling changes of the 2004 RSV 1000 R. The redesign moved the V-twin superbike away from the first-generation Mille's proportions toward a more compact, sharper and more centralized package.
The 2004 RSV 1000 R retained Aprilia's 60-degree twin-cylinder layout but used the V990 NG evolution. Factory data gives 998 cm³ displacement, a 97 × 67.5 mm bore and stroke, 11.8 ± 0.4:1 compression, four valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts. Electronic multipoint injection uses 57 mm throttle bodies, while the engine employs liquid cooling, dry-sump lubrication and a hydraulically operated wet multi-plate clutch with Aprilia's PPC system. Drive passes through a six-speed gearbox and 16/40 chain final drive, preserving the character of a 998 cc V-twin superbike while modernizing its fueling and control systems.
The chassis was redesigned around a light-alloy twin-beam frame and asymmetric aluminium swingarm, with a 1,410 mm wheelbase and 25-degree steering-head angle. The standard RSV 1000 R uses a 43 mm adjustable upside-down fork with 127 mm travel, while the RSV 1000 R Factory receives the higher-specification suspension package with 120 mm front travel, plus other lightweight and track-oriented equipment. Both versions use twin 320 mm front discs with four-piston calipers and a 220 mm rear disc. Factory figures list running-order weight at 215 kg for the R and 209 kg for the Factory.
This generation also became an important platform for Aprilia's wider litre-bike range. Piaggio's Tuono history states that the 2006 Tuono generation was inspired by the technical and aesthetic changes made to the 2004 RSV 1000 R. The V-twin RSV line remained Aprilia's flagship superbike architecture through the mid-2000s before the company made a fundamental break with the narrow-V4 RSV4, which Aprilia's official history records as being introduced to the public in 2009. That transition marked the end of the RSV's large-capacity V-twin era at the top of the range.
This listing is based specifically on factory workshop publication 8140742 USA, first edition October 2003, for the RSV 1000 R and RSV 1000 R Factory. It covers technical data, scheduled maintenance, fuel injection, engine removal and refitting, suspension, wheels, brakes, hydraulic clutch, drive chain, cooling, electrical diagnostics and wiring; detailed internal engine procedures are referenced to separate engine technical publications. Related documents are grouped in the Aprilia RSV 1000 manual category.
