About the Buell P3
Buell introduced the Blast for the 2000 model year as a purpose-built entry point into motorcycling rather than a reduced version of one of its larger sport models. The project was closely tied to Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge training initiative and was developed around low-speed confidence, simple controls, low ownership cost and durable everyday use. Contemporary Cycle World testing described the Blast as a motorcycle aimed directly at new riders while still being entertaining enough to avoid feeling like a disposable training machine. See Cycle World’s original Buell Blast road test.
The P3 platform used a 492 cm³ air-cooled pushrod single-cylinder engine with an 88.8 mm bore, 79.375 mm stroke and 9.2:1 compression ratio. A 40 mm Keihin constant-velocity carburetor, hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, five-speed transmission and belt final drive kept the motorcycle mechanically straightforward. Cycle World’s technical feature on the engine explained that the design shared manufacturing heritage with Harley-Davidson’s pushrod V-twins but was extensively re-engineered for lower cost, lighter weight and the different operating needs of a small single-cylinder motorcycle. See Cycle World’s Blast engine development feature.
The chassis followed the same accessibility-first philosophy. By 2004 the Blast retained 16-inch wheels, a 1,404 mm wheelbase, 25-degree rake and 86 mm trail, with factory low- and high-seat heights of 648 mm and 698 mm. Wet weight was listed at 172 kg and fuel capacity at 10.6 litres. Those dimensions, combined with a narrow chassis, manageable steering effort and modest engine output, made it an entry-level 492 cc single-cylinder motorcycle suited to rider training, commuting and everyday road use rather than outright performance.
The 2004 model represents the mature middle period of the Blast’s single-generation P3 platform rather than a major redesign. The core engine, carbureted induction, belt drive, chassis proportions and two-seat-height approach remained consistent with the original concept while Buell continued incremental detail development. Harley-Davidson’s official 2004 P3 parts catalog identifies the same Blast P3 model designation and 2004 model-year coding, reinforcing that the motorcycle remained within the established P3 lineage rather than moving to the later XB fuel-in-frame architecture used by Buell’s sport models. See Harley-Davidson’s official 2004 Buell P3 Blast parts catalog.
This factory publication covers the 2004 Blast P3 and is identified as part 99492-04Y. Its title page and VIN section both identify the 2004 model year, matching Harley-Davidson’s official service-publication index. Related documentation is grouped in the Buell P3 Blast service manual catalog.
