About the Buell P3
Buell introduced the Blast for the 2000 model year as a purpose-built entry point into motorcycling rather than a scaled-down version of one of its sport models. Erik Buell’s team emphasized low-speed confidence, simple operation and low ownership cost, and the motorcycle became closely associated with Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge training program. Contemporary Cycle World testing described the Blast as a machine designed specifically to attract new riders, with a low center of gravity, generous steering lock and approachable ergonomics. See Cycle World’s original Blast road test.
The P3 platform centered on a 492 cm³ air-cooled pushrod single with an 88.8 mm bore, 79.375 mm stroke and 9.2:1 compression ratio. A 40 mm Keihin constant-velocity carburetor, hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, five-speed gearbox and belt final drive kept the drivetrain mechanically straightforward. The engine architecture drew on Harley-Davidson manufacturing practice, but it was developed specifically for the Blast rather than simply being one cylinder of a production Sportster engine. The result was tuned for tractable low- and mid-range response, easy starting and low routine maintenance rather than high specific output.
The chassis followed the same accessibility-first brief. For 2003 the Blast used 16-inch wheels, a 1,404 mm wheelbase, 25-degree rake and 86 mm trail, with factory low- and high-seat heights of 648 mm and 698 mm. Wet weight was listed at 172 kg and fuel capacity at 10.6 litres. Those dimensions, combined with a relatively narrow chassis, modest steering effort and manageable power delivery, made it an entry-level 492 cc single-cylinder motorcycle aimed at commuting, training and everyday road use rather than outright performance.
By the 2003 model year the Blast had settled into a stable production form. Its core engine, belt-drive layout, low-seat option and beginner-focused positioning remained consistent with the original 2000 concept, while Buell continued incremental detail refinement rather than introducing a new generation. Harley-Davidson’s official 2003 parts catalog identifies model code KP as Blast P3, the 492 cc World and California engine codes, and model-year code 3 for 2003. See Harley-Davidson’s official 2003 P3 Blast parts catalog.
This factory publication covers the 2003 Blast P3 and is identified as part 99492-03Y. Its title page and VIN section both identify the 2003 model year, matching Harley-Davidson’s service-publication index. Related documentation is grouped in the Buell P3 Blast service manual catalog.
