About the Honda VTX1300
Honda created the VTX line around the idea of a large-capacity V-twin custom motorcycle that combined traditional cruiser proportions with modern liquid cooling, substantial chassis engineering and strong low-speed torque. The first VTX1800 arrived for the 2002 model year as Honda’s American flagship custom platform, establishing the visual and engineering direction that the smaller-capacity 1300 family would follow. Honda’s original VTX launch material emphasized a muscular V-twin character, low seating position and long, substantial road presence rather than a lightweight or minimalist cruiser concept. See Honda’s original VTX launch announcement.
The VTX1300 family brought that formula into a somewhat lighter and more accessible package. Its 1,312 cc liquid-cooled 52-degree SOHC V-twin used three valves per cylinder, an 89.5 × 104.3 mm bore and stroke, 9.2:1 compression and a single 38 mm constant-velocity carburetor. Power passed through a cable-operated wet multi-plate clutch, five-speed transmission and shaft final drive. Twin spark plugs per cylinder and digital ignition supported clean combustion while preserving the long-stroke V-twin feel that defined the range as a large-displacement shaft-drive cruiser.
The early family included the VTX1300S and VTX1300R. Both shared the same core engine, transmission and shaft-drive architecture, but Honda differentiated them through wheel, trim and styling details. The S emphasized a more traditional spoke-wheel cruiser presentation, while the R adopted a retro-oriented treatment of the same basic platform. Across both versions, the low seat, long wheelbase, full-sized fenders and relaxed ergonomics reinforced the VTX1300’s role as a substantial road cruiser designed for steady torque delivery and long-distance comfort.
Honda expanded the 1300 range quickly. For 2004 it also offered the VTX1300C, using the same 1,312 cc 52-degree V-twin, 38 mm carburetor, five-speed gearbox and shaft drive in a more custom-oriented chassis and styling package. Honda’s official 2004 specifications document that shared mechanical architecture: Honda’s 2004 VTX1300 specifications. Later years brought additional C, R, S and T derivatives, but the underlying carbureted 1,312 cc platform remained recognizable throughout the VTX1300 line.
This 350-page factory service manual covers the 2003-2004 VTX1300R and VTX1300S edition identified on its genuine Honda cover. The earlier April 2002 VTX1300S front matter belongs to the base publication material retained within this revised factory edition and does not override the R/S coverage stated on the cover. Related publications are grouped in the Honda VTX1300 service manual catalog.
