About the Kawasaki Mean Streak
Kawasaki introduced the Vulcan 1500 Mean Streak for the 2002 model year as a performance-oriented version of its large Vulcan cruiser. The first model carried the factory designation VN1500-P1. Kawasaki retained the basic 1,470 cc liquid-cooled V-twin architecture but combined it with Digital Fuel Injection, revised engine tuning and a chassis aimed at more responsive road performance. Kawasaki's current parts records confirm the 2002 P1 designation.
The Mean Streak differed significantly from the more traditional Vulcan 1500 variants in its running gear. It used 17-inch radial tires, an upside-down front fork and twin front brake discs, while retaining the five-speed gearbox and shaft final drive. Factory specifications rated applicable-market versions at up to 72 PS and 114 Nm.
Period testing reflected Kawasaki's intention to make the Mean Streak a more dynamic cruiser. Cycle World highlighted its stronger brakes, firmer suspension, neutral steering and increased performance compared with earlier Vulcan cruisers.
For 2003, Kawasaki continued the VN1500 Mean Streak as the VN1500-P2. Kawasaki's official parts catalog identifies the 2003 model under that designation, and OEM publication records associate the same VN1500P service-manual family with the P1/P2 generation.
The VN1500 version had a short two-year production run. For 2004, Kawasaki moved the Mean Streak concept to the larger Vulcan 1600 Mean Streak, VN1600-B1, with its own factory service manual and a different manual family.
