About the Kawasaki Drifter
Kawasaki introduced the Vulcan 1500 Drifter for 1999 as the VN1500-J1. Its distinctive design took inspiration from large American motorcycles of the late 1940s, particularly the deeply valanced fenders and flowing lines associated with the Indian Chief. Kawasaki's official records confirm the 1999 J1 as the first Vulcan 1500 Drifter.
The production motorcycle grew out of a custom project by Denny Berg and Cobra Engineering based on a Vulcan 1500 Classic. The prototype attracted considerable attention on the show circuit, and Kawasaki subsequently developed the idea into a production model. Contemporary Cycle World coverage described the resulting Drifter as Kawasaki's modern interpretation of the late-1940s Indian Chief style.
Despite its vintage appearance, the Drifter used contemporary technology. Its liquid-cooled 1,470 cc SOHC V-twin was equipped with electronic fuel injection, electronic ignition and a five-speed transmission, with power delivered through shaft final drive. The full-skirt fenders, wire-spoke wheels and low cruiser stance provided the period styling, while DFI and liquid cooling distinguished it mechanically from the motorcycles that inspired its appearance.
For 2001, Kawasaki introduced the VN1500-R1 generation covered by this service manual. The R1 carried a 19-litre fuel tank, 730 mm seat height and a factory-rated output of 47 kW or 64 PS in markets where power figures were published. Kawasaki's current parts catalog identifies the R1 specifically as the 2001 Vulcan 1500 Drifter.
The R-series continued through the VN1500-R5 for 2005, the final model year of the Vulcan 1500 Drifter. Kawasaki's factory records still identify the 2005 R5 as a Vulcan 1500 Drifter.
