Husaberg was created in Sweden in 1988 by members of the original Husqvarna development team who remained behind after Husqvarna's motorcycle operations moved to Italy. The 450 uses a 100 × 57.2 mm bore and stroke with 13.0:1 compression, the 501 uses 95 × 70.7 mm and 11.6:1, the 550 uses 100 × 70 mm and 11.8:1, and the 650 uses 100 × 82 mm and 11.5:1. Keihin FCR-MX 39 or 41 carburetors supply fuel, depending on model. The FC motocross versions use four-speed gearboxes, while the FE enduro and FS supermoto versions use six-speed transmissions, all with wet multi-disc clutches and chain final drive.

Chassis specifications also separate the three model families. The FC and FE machines use 21-inch front wheels, while the FS supermoto versions use 17-inch road wheels and a larger 310 mm front brake disc. Factory data lists WP 4860 upside-down forks and WP PDS rear suspension throughout the range, with different travel and damping settings for motocross, enduro and supermoto use.
